A portion of the huge gladiator mosaic in the Villa Borghese in Rome, one of the most incredible ancient Roman mosaics I have ever seen. "Of particular interest is the scene with the gladiator Alumnus, who has killed the secutor (pursuer) Mazicianus, depicted supine in his own blood. Alumnus is one of the most striking figures: on his left arm he is wearing a sleeve (a piece of armour) executed with tesserae of colours ranging from red to yellow and green. Around his body, a white subligaculum (waistband) with grey streaks is held in place by a brightly coloured baldric." Per the website galleriaborghese.net. This masterpiece dates to the early 4th century AD and was found on the outskirts of Rome on property belonging to the Borghese family.

A Roman polychrome coffered floor mosaic with depictions of plants and weapons. It dates to the mid 1st century BC, was found on the Caelian hill in Rome, and was on display last year when I took this picture in a special exhibition there in the Capitoline Museums - Centrale Montemartini.
