Did you ever wonder why Sanford is called, "The Town that Refused to Die?" In 1954, Sanford, Maine, suffered a severe economic crisis when the Goodall-Sanford textile empire closed and left 3,600 workers unemployed overnight. Due to this multi-million dollar closure which left employees penniless, 1954 was also the year the town decided to form the Sanford Springvale Chamber of Commerce.
