Everyone can be an artist and our Artistic Explorers program is designed to spark the imagination of some of our youngest community members! For our second session of the 2023-2024 museum season we read, “Pablo: The Plate Painter of Mazatlán,” written by Craig M. Porter Rollins and illustrated by Rufus Zaejodaeus.

Participants learned about the ceramic process and layering background, mid-ground and foreground, using stamps and stencils to add underglaze to bisque wear. Our young artists left their creations to be sealed and fired in the ceramics studio in the kiln used by our SBU Visual Arts majors. They are set to be returned just in time for the holiday season as a surprise gift to make someone’s day!

We say it every year, but only because it’s true…

Our judges have their work cut out for them as we begin the jurying process for our 2023-2024 Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade Juried Art Exhibition.

Three-hundred and thirty-five amazing works of art were submitted from teachers across WNY and NWPA and we wish we could display them all!

Artistic Explorers: Session 1 - Ghostly Graphics

Everyone can be an artist and our Artistic Explorers program is designed to spark the imagination of some of our youngest community members!

For our first session of the 2023-2024 museum season we read, “The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt, written by Riel Nason and illustrated by Byron Eggenschwiler.

We designed our own ghostly works of art using fluid acrylics and scrapers. We then turned one of our ghosts into a "Quilt Ghost," using neon paints and repetitive square patterns. To finish the spooktacular pieces, each artist created their own Halloween inspired background complete with falling leaves and a cloudy night sky.

Our ArtMobile Team spent an unBOOlievable Halloween at the Olean Public Library’s 2023 Trunk-Or-Treat event!

In an effort to beat the bitter cold on Halloween night, we decided to turn the back of our ArtMobile into a “Disco Inferno,” complete with party lights, disco ball, backup dancers, fringe, and disco hits. Our Arts Education Assistants, Kate Bennett and Julia Babcock, along with our Assistant Curator and Museum Educator, Sean Conklin, were there until the “Last Dance,” handing out treats and art supplies to the local community.

We had so much fun seeing all the amazing and creative costumes from people visiting our ArtMobile Disco at this wonderful event!

See “The Crow Kiss” scarecrow in person in front of the Allegany Town Hall before it’s retired in the beginning of November!

Our submission for the Enchanted Mountain Garden Club 2023 Scarecrow Row – The Crow Kiss! Designed and assembled by Sean Conklin, Assistant Curator and Museum Educator, the "scarecrow" is an autumnal interpretation of Gustav Klimt’s work “The Kiss.” Autumn and summer, personified as lovers, embrace to symbolize the changing of the seasons as leaves fall and flower dry around them.
