Dating back to the WWII era, this historic artifact is a hand-crafted P-38 Lightning trench art sculpture made from spent brass shell casings, donated to the museum by G.R. Baine of Lehigh Acres, Florida. The model plane is displayed on a stand with a polished wood base. The inscription reads 'P-38, NIGHT FIGHTER' Souvenir of Russell Islands. The sculpture features non-rotating propellers. Crafted by soldiers during their downtime in barracks, these sculptures served as souvenirs throughout the Pacific Theater campaign. •Artifact Components: The Base: Fabricated from a large, cut-down artillery shell casing repurposed as a traditional ashtray bowl. •The Pedestal: A smaller caliber bullet casing acts as the vertical mounting pillar, providing support for the display. •The Aircraft: A meticulously hand-formed model of the distinctive twin-boom Lockheed P-38 Lightning. •The Mount: A polished, circular wooden plinth adorned with hand-painted gold lettering.
