Join us in celebrating Scott Burton (1939–1989) on what would have been his 87th birthday! 🎂💙🪨

Burton's sculptures and performance art were the focus of our 2024 exhibition, "Scott Burton: Shape Shift," the most comprehensive exhibition of his work in the United States since his death from AIDS-related complications in 1989. Pictured here is his "Rock Settee" (1988–1990), a permanent fixture in the museum's water court, where visitors can sit and take in the reflecting pool.

This Saturday, join Professor Eric Mumford, the Rebecca and John Voyles Professor of Architecture at the WashU Sam Fox School, for a presentation exploring modern architecture in St. Louis from the 1930s through the 1970s.

Mumford was one of the curators behind the WashU Kemper Art Museum's 2024 exhibition "Design Agendas: Modern Architecture in St. Louis, 1930s–1970s," which examined the complex intersections of urban renewal, racial displacement, and architectural ambition that defined mid-century St. Louis.

Scott Burton's legacy lives on. Today, the NYC AIDS Memorial unveils "Eternal Flame for Scott Burton," a new functional sculpture by Oscar Tuazon, built from salvaged elements of Burton's final public installation at Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.

Burton, who died of AIDS-related illness in 1989, believed that redefining everyday objects, furniture, and public space was itself a political act. Tuazon's work honors that spirit while marking the memorial's 10th anniversary.

We had the pleasure of presenting Burton's work here in St. Louis in "Scott Burton: Shape Shift" (Sep 6, 2025–Feb 2, 2025).

The museum will be closed today, Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. We will reopen on Saturday, June 20, with our normal hours.

On Wednesday, October 17, 2001, the Pulitzer opened its doors for the first time. “Opening Installation” brought together rarely seen sculptures, paintings, prints, and drawings from the private collection of Joseph and Emily Rauh Pulitzer. Works by artists including Roy Lichtenstein, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko, Kiki Smith, and Andy Warhol filled the galleries, spanning major artistic movements of the twentieth century: Impressionism, Cubism, Pop Art, Minimalism, and beyond. Our permanently installed sculptures, “Blue Black,” by Ellsworth Kelly, and “Joe,” by Richard Serra, were also newly on view. “Opening Installation” did not include wall labels or explanatory texts, leaving space for visitors to look, linger, discuss, and form their own connections—intentions that have guided our spirit ever since.
