The Arts Alliance was created to promote and support cultural and arts-related activities and programs at the college for the enrichment and enjoyment of the Southern Maryland Community. Mary’s College faculty members and guest artists
- Awards cash prizes to outstanding St. Mary’s College students in the arts
- Organizes arts outreach programs to schools and community groups
- Supports the development of the college art collection

"Arcana": A severe drought endangers a commune on the outskirts of society. To find the next steps, they decide to perform a ritual, but the misaligned intentions create an all-powerful goddess. They have to come up with an offering, or she will make the situation much worse. Audiences will be invited to make active choices that affect the outcome of the story as they become part of the performance community.

"Orpheus Through Movement": a non-verbal, dance-based reimagining of the tragic Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.

On Wednesday, Apr. 10 at 7:30 p.m., Mapuche filmmaker Francisco Huichaqueo will join us in Cole Cinema for a screening of Künü (2023). The one-hour documentary captures the efforts to reclaim ancestral lands from a transnational forestry company in Chile. After the screening, there will be a Q&A conversation.
On Thursday, Apr. 11 at 11:15 a.m., Huichaqueo will deliver a presentation on non-Western approaches to museum curatorial practices in the Blackistone Room of Anne Arundel Hall.

In her Artist Talk, Merrill Mason will discuss her creative work that merges photography, textiles and poetry and is situated at the intersection of art and science. While in residence at the Artist House at SMCM for the month of April, she will be working on a large-scale quilt that uses Charles Darwin's manuscripts of On the Origin of Species as subject and source material.

She graduated cm laude from Yale in the first undergraduate class to include women (1971) and received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2007 Mason moved to the American Philosophical Society as Director where she oversaw the Society’s renowned collection of over 13 million manuscripts plus rare books and paintings. Throughout her years as a museum administrator, Mason continued to produce artwork and to exhibit.

Please the VOICES Reading Series and the International Languages and Cultures Department for a performance from José Torres-Tama on Thursday, March 28 in the auditorium of the Dodge Performing Arts Center.

Torres-Tama is an Ecuadorian-born interdisciplinary troublemaker. He is an award-winning performance and visual artist, published playwright and poet, photographer and journalist, and arts educator.

On Wednesday, Mar. 27, the Center for the Study of Democracy, in collaboration with the African and African Diaspora Studies program and International Languages and Cultures, is pleased to sponsor a free lecture and Q&A with Esther Mujawayo, Rwandan author, psychotherapist and survivor of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

There will be a reception with heavy hors d'oeuvres from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. and Ms. Mujawayo's talk will begin at 7:30 p.m.
