This year’s returning juror is local artist and SAA’s gallery manager and board secretary, Valeria Ochoa.

Valeria is a full-time Literature and Language educator, supporting Norwalk Public Schools’ population. She holds a B.A. in English, an M.A. in Linguistics and an M.A in curriculum and instruction. She is passionate about storytelling through both writing and photography. Her creative work captures the beauty of everyday life and centers voices from all walks of life.

As a first generation Colombian, ancestry, roots and lineage as well as its ties to land and belonging has been a centerpiece in the fabric of her life. Beyond being a high school teacher, she is deeply invested in the power of language, both as a tool for communication and as an evolving art form.

The show will run from September 24, 2026 - October 22, 2026.

Stephanie Fiorino
Acrylic paint on canvas
24×48"

Description: I've always loved sea turtles and wanted to challenge myself to produce their texture. I also enjoyed creating the kelp and different levels of depth to the blues in the background. It's very soothing to look at and I found it calming to paint.

Bio: Stephanie Fiorino was an art major at Manhattanville College, her main medium being photography. She has been teaching visual art for 17 years in a public elementary school in the Bronx. Some of her students’ work has been exhibited in the PS Art citywide exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Bronx Borough Arts Festival at Lehman College Gallery. When the school lost one of their assistant principals to Covid during the pandemic, Stephanie led a team to paint a mural in her memory in the school. During the process she found herself challenged and enjoyed painting sea animals with texture. When she lost her mother in 2022, she found having this side project was a channel for healing. She challenged herself to paint her immediate family’s favorite animals in a large-scale format with lots of attention to texture. Stephanie also enjoyed making an abstract background with Klimt-like patterns and colors. Stephanie is deaf with a cochlear implant and uses ASL and English. She believes art is a universal language. She currently resides in Rye Brook with her husband Sam and her son, Myles. She has shown her work locally at Larchmont Library, Crawford Park Mansion and in Norwalk, Conn., at Valencia Luncheria Restaurant. She also takes commissions for pet portraits.
