The NYTimes art critics are evaluating the strength of this exhibition in comparison to the Met’s Harlem Renaissance exhibition back in the 70s were Black Artists were excluded, causing major protests as a result. The excitement continues to build in anticipation of tomorrow’s Lenders Dinner, followed by Members and Patrons tours and receptions all day Thursday and throughout the evening! The Public will get its first glimpse of The Harlem Renaissance Exhibition on Sunday, Feb 25th where Clark Atlanta University Art Museum’s Museum Director Dr. Danille Taylor will be on location to welcome visitors between 11am and 3pm! HBCU Art Collections are finally getting long overdue exposure given the significance of their holdings, thus making HBCUs overall incredibly proud!
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

The museum catches up to the vital lessons of the Harlem Renaissance, with its American, European and African exchanges and its cultural solidarity.

While trekking through the ATL airport, on our return from the cruise, grabbed an “old skool” newspaper to catchup on current events. I was so incredibly overjoyed to see the The Atlanta Journal-Constitution front page article about the treasures of Atlanta’s HBCU Art Collections featuring Clark Atlanta University Art Museum’s Director Dr. Danille Taylor! It’s gets better. The rest of the article included a full, two page spread on Spelman College Museum of Fine Art featuring Director Liz Andrews and the AUC Art Collective run by Dr. Cheryl Finley. I’m incredibly blessed to work with each of these historical art collections and also the art collection of Morehouse College! I took a few quick screenshots and hope you can find the entire article online to enjoy!

HDAP Sunday School: HBCU Art Collections, Figures, Facts & Findings

Did you know that the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is home of the Mosely Gallery? The Mosely Gallery was named after artist Jimmie Lee Mosely, first chairman of the fine arts department.

Jimmie Lee Mosley was born January 17, 1927. He began his studies at Florida A&M University
in 1947. At that time, the university didn’t have an art education program, causing him to transfer to Texas State University for Negroes (Texas State University) where he became the university’s first student to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art Education. Later in 1974, Mosley received his master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University

In 1951, Mosley joined the University of Maryland Eastern Shore faculty as an assistant professor of ceramics where he built his career as an artist and developed the college’s art department. He laid the foundation for the Mosely Gallery and exhibited his art across the country.

Today, the Mosely Gallery thrives as a teaching resource in the fine arts that enhances the liberal arts experience for the entire university community. It also serves as a catalyst and center for life-long learning, research, cultural recreation and pleasure to the wider public community, locally and regionally.

Did you know that the art collection of
Morgan State University is located in the James E. Lewis Museum of Art? One of the featured artists is William H Johnson. Johnson, born in South Carolina in 1901, was known for his hundreds of works, but it wasn’t until recently that Johnson’s artwork began to receive its due attention.

JELMA has one of Johnson’s still life oil paintings on display, where Johnson’s use of bright colors helps define his bold artistic style. His artwork showcases African American life and culture, inspired by his upbringing in South Carolina, and his life in New York, where Johnson moved when he was seventeen years old. He eventually saved enough money to pay for an art education and attended National Academy of Design.

Wanna learn more about the career William H. Johnson and see his artwork on display? Be sure to checkout “Fighters for Freedom”, a traveling exhibition that stops by the
Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM), from March 2024 - Sept 2024. Hope to see you there!!!

It’s almost tax season! The IRS is cautioning taxpayers to carefully pay attention to “exaggerated art donation deductions” aimed at high-income taxpayers.

The scheme involves bogus promoters who could persuade high income taxpayers to purchase art, wait to donate the art, and then take an inaccurate deduction for the art that was donated.

According to an article published by Thomson Reuters there are a number of factors that can lead to exaggerated art donation deductions. Purchasing multiple pieces of work by the same artists can be a red flag, or promoters encouraging certain appraisers for the buyer to use can be a red flag.

The IRS advises taxpayers to properly claim an art donation and offers more information on the IRS Art Appraisal Services.

Looking to avoid higher than normal art donation deductions? Start with an accurate appraisal!

Contact Picture That to learn more about our art appraisal services! We’re here to help you learn the true value of your artwork, and avoid any issues around tax time!
