In late July of 1918, John I. M. Kindberg left Stanton and, along with a large number of Iowa boys, was sent to Camp Pike, Little Rock, AR. After a short training period, he was sent overseas and later assigned to the 23rd Infantry. On November 5, 1918, his name was listed on the casualty list. Pvt. Kindberg’s death was confirmed in a letter to Rev. O. A. Elmquist in early February 1919. The letter stated that he was killed by shrapnel near Beaumont, Nance, in the Argonne-Meuse battle. He was buried by the side of the road where he and several others had fallen. In April of 1919, John Kindberg was contacted by the government regarding the disposition of his son’s body. He was given three choices: leave the body in France, have it interred in the national cemetery at Arlington, or brought home. Mr. Kindberg chose to bring his son home. Pvt. Kindberg’s body arrived in the States along with 1,500 others. Fifteen were sent to Omaha, and soldiers stationed at Fort Crook escorted them to their destinations. Private Clarence Beauman accompanied Pvt. Kindberg’s body to Stanton. Under the supervision of the American Legion (Ernie Johnson Post), a funeral with full military honors took place on Sunday, April 3, 1921. His body was laid to rest in Mamre Cemetery.
