It's Jazz Appreciation Month!

Arthur "Art" Blakey was born on October 11, 1919 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Blake began his music career playing the piano when he was a teenager before switching to drums in the 1930s. There is a story about the origin od the switch where he was forced to play drums during a gig, though this is not confirmed. He played for several bands until he co-founded the Jazz Messengers in 1954. Around this time, Blake began playing Gretsch drums. He started off on Broadkaster model kits, which consisted of one bass, one snare drum, and two toms with theee K. Zildjian cymbals. In a 1958 catalog, he is listed as playing the Broadkaster "Progressive Jazz" drum outfit, though by 1966, it is shortened to Progressive Jazz. Some say that he played the Round-Badge drums and he did, though it was not a different kind of model. The round-badge is used for all Gtetsch drums from the 1930s to 1971 when they switched over to the "stop-sign" badge. He stayed with the Jazz Messengers until shortly before his death on October 16, 1990.

Join us for a breakfast reception celebrating one of our very own museum employees, Jema Caumanday, and her peer Emma Robinson. They both completed individual research projects with the Sustainability Grant under the direction of Assistant Professors Dr. Edward Lo and Dr. Sarah Friedman.

They recently presented this work at a regional Geological Society of America conference and we are excited to be showcasing their work in a temporary exhibit in our Hall of Natural History!

Come join us Friday April 10th at 9 am for a breakfast reception.

Help us celebrate Women's History Month with this special Gretsch Artist spotlight:

Mary Osborne was born on July 17, 1921 in Minot, North Dakota, and grew up in a highly musical family. She began experimenting with string instruments as a young child and settled on guitar at age nine, later becoming inspired by hearing Charlie Christian as a teenager. By the late 1930s and early 1940s she was performing professionally and soon became a prominent jazz guitarist in New York. She played with legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, and Thelonious Monk.

Osborne became endorsed by the Gretsch company in the 1950s, a rare honor for a female jazz guitarist of the era. She played Gretsch Country Club and White Falcon models during her endorsement period. Her most notable accomplishments include being one od the first widely recognized female jazz guitarists and influenced early rhythm and blues and rock guitar styles. While she was best known for her live performances rather than hit singles, her recordings with the Mary Osborne Trio remain admired for their swing, precision, and innovative phrasing.
