Museum and genealogical library preserves and exhibits artifacts from Jefferson County, Ohio in a 19 room mansion. Volunteer staff manages the building, conducts tours, assists in research, and shares stories.

I looked at another of the many scrapbooks that this one (not yet known) person has donated and they are so interesting. 1942 was a year of lots of crime and automobile accidents but also the start of the war and the area had to practice blackout drills. Also an effort was underway to melt metal for the war effort and a cannon on the courthouse lawn and a bell from a fire station were the first to be melted.

Many more scrapbooks were found in our basement with years from the 1930s to the 1960s. I do not know who donated them yet but pulled this one out and found some interesting things. We are going to have to make the time to scan this set

We have lots of scrapbooks that have been given to us and we are scanning some. This week I was looking at one from 1944 and the first page I opened was a plane crash on the Saho farm which I think is near the JVS. It’s an interesting article but the last paragraph is just Wow. I might just have to scan some more of these scrapbooks.

Tomorrow November 15 we are having an open house from 12-4 at the museum to showcase the Christmas decorations of one of our board members Roger Pyles who has a great collection of unique things. Some of the bulbs are made from the ash of Mountain St Helens volcano. Please come and walk around and see our place. There might even be some food!

A couple more mysteries. Here’s what we know. Denmarks was at 114 south 4th st in this picture which was across from Grand Theater The bottom photo says Lincoln school playground on the back. Any other information or people identifying would be appreciated

History Mysteries. We are scanning lots of pictures and some are great pictures with not much information. Today I am posting these pictures that I believe are sesquicentennial parade in 1947. Maybe someone will recognize somebody or where the picture was taken. Notice the brick street.

Recently we got an email from a man who bought a piece of property near Sante Fe, New Mexico that has this log cabin on it. He was told it was from here and had been hit with a car and he did not know how it ended up in Sante Fe. A quick call to the Richmond Historical Society and the people there were very helpful. This had originally been the Sentich Insurance Agency in Richmond and the building had been damaged by a vehicle. The building had been originally a log cabin and a man purchased it and restored it in 2005. The new owner sent these pictures and it is gorgeous. I will include the Herald-Star article in the comments that includes much more information

Another one of our scanned images. I know that this was in later years a workshop for the school of Bright Promise graduates but does anyone have any stories of its time as a Naval Training Center?

We are starting to scan pictures in our museum and this one we do not know the name of the church. I am hoping someone will recognize a relatives name and know the answer for us. It’s odd to know the names of everyone in the picture and not name of the church. Thanks

If you grew up in the north end of Steubenville you might remember Chet’s Confectionery at the corner of Franklin and 6th street. Recently Chet’s daughter stopped at our museum on her way to her class reunion and brought these pictures. Her family ran this store from 1933-1969 and the family lived upstairs. She told us of the many other stores nearby including two shoe repair shops and a meat market. Hope you enjoy the pictures
