The Long Island Museum and LIMarts are pleased to announce that the June 2026 artist of the month is Richard Gardner!

Richard’s roots are grounded in beauty. Major influences of his include the celebrated fashion photographer Sarah Moon, in addition to the Surrealist artist Man Ray. For decades, as a hairdresser, make-up artist, and photographer, he has documented the perceived reality of beauty within the current zeitgeist.

You can see his work on view at the LIM’s Visitor Center through June:

From the schoolyard to the museum gallery, this 1970s The Bionic Woman metal lunchbox is bringing back serious cafeteria nostalgia in LIM’s “Long Island in the ’70s” exhibition! 📺⚡🍎

By the 1970s, metal lunchboxes featuring TV shows, cartoons, superheroes, and musicians had become a staple of school cafeterias across America — and few were cooler than the Binoinc Woman herself. Played by Lindsay Wagner, Jaime Sommers was smart, fearless, and armed with bionic strength.

Now this pop culture favorite has gone from holding PB&Js to holding memories. See it along with other ‘70s toys on view through October 18, 2026.

Did you have a favorite lunchbox growing up? Tell us which one you carried to school! 👇

Join LIM and the Port Jefferson Arts Council for a FREE screening and discussion of “New Wave: Dare to Be Different” (2017) on June 18 at 7:00 pm with special guest Larry “The Duck” Dunn! 🤘📻🎬

Discover how WLIR, a small Long Island radio station, helped revolutionize American radio by introducing New Wave and post-punk music to U.S. audiences long before the genres went mainstream. Through its bold, independent programming, WLIR introduced American listeners to artists like U2, Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, Blondie, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, The Clash, and The Cure well before they became global sensations, defying record label pressures to spotlight emerging European acts and helping shape the New Wave movement in America.

Following the screening, join us for a fascinating talk with Larry “The Duck” Dunn, one of the original DJs at WLIR and current DJ on Sirius XM 1st Wave!

🎟️ Seating is limited, so registration is requested at longislandmuseum.org/newwave

✨ Come early for free entry to the museum after 5:00 pm and visit the “Long Island in the ‘70s” exhibit before the screening!
