The Long Island Museum

Permanent and changing exhibitions along with the finest collection of horse-drawn vehicles in the country illustrate Long Island's rich cultural heritage.

The Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection, alongside our world-class carriage collection. Located in the heart of Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum offers three exhibition buildings, gardens, outdoor sculpture, a one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop and other historic buildings. Public programs, music, workshops, lectures and special events are offered throughout the year. Membership is available.

The Long Island Museum and Long Island Chamber Music The Long Island Museum and Long Island Chamber Music presents a new series embracing the early American tradition of intimate living room salons of the Gilded Age with world-class chamber music inside LIM’s historic Carriage Museum

Join us on September 27 at 3:00 pm for a live musical performance, “Music of the Gilded Age” with Steinway Artist Zhenni Li-Cohen on piano and Long Island Chamber Music founder Gergana Haralampieva on violin. Explore the heritage of American classical music, featuring music by Gershwin, Dvorak, Rachmaninoff, and more. Take a step back in time to a transformative era in music history, tracing the roots of a distinctly American style of music through rich, romantic, and soul-stirring melodies.

Every child deserves the chance to experience a museum and we need YOUR help to make that possible for local schoolchildren.

A child’s first museum visit can spark curiosity, inspire imagination, and create memories that last a lifetime. But for many Long Island schools, the rising costs of buses, fuel, and field trip fees are making those experiences financially impossible.

LIM’s Rides for Kids helps make field trips possible by providing eligible schools with subsidized transportation and reduced program fees. Since 2013, the program has helped nearly 15,000 students from underrepresented school districts across Long Island visit The Long Island Museum.

This academic year, we are experiencing a high demand from Long Island schools who need support to afford field trips for their students, and our limited funding means we will have to turn down many requests.

On September 25 at 7:00 pm. join us for an evening of sound healing honoring the Fall Equinox with practitioner Toni Ann Nazimek, featuring crystal singing bowls, Tibetan bowls, chimes & gongs.

Focus on nurturing the qualities of balance and renewal that this seasonal shift brings, and work on creating personalized intentions, incorporating them into the evening’s meditation, as the sound waves soothe your mind, bring your body into vibrational balance, and carry you through a peaceful inward journey. This program will take place outdoors on the Art Museum Lawn next to our beautiful fountain garden (indoors if raining).

Although Fisher-Price had been inspiring young imaginations with toys since 1930, the 1960s and ’70s brought a new kind of playtime favorite: the Play Family People, later renamed Little People. With their simple designs and colorful accessories, these tiny figures invited children to create their own worlds, characters, and stories.

Two sets on view in our “Long Island in the ’70s” exhibition capture the magic of this imaginative play: the schoolhouse (left) and family house (right). With just a handful of figures and a miniature setting, children could become teachers, students, parents, neighbors, and anything else their imaginations dreamed up!

FROM THE ARCHIVES: Summer may be winding down, but there are still a few precious beach-worthy weekends left! ☀️🌊

Just like Long Islanders today, folks a century ago knew how to make the most of a sunny summer day by heading to the shore to escape the heat—although they did so in considerably more clothing!

This charming photograph from LIM’s archives shows the Hawkins family enjoying a day at Pine View in Stony Brook, NY, at the beginning of the 20th century.

This immaculately worked beaded purse is one of the exquisite examples of local Native American craftsmanship featured in our “Enduring Hearts” exhibition.

The purse was reportedly purchased in Shinnecock territory as a wedding gift for Caroline Brewer from her husband, William Smith Avery, and was used at their 1845 wedding in East Hartford, Connecticut. It showcases the intricate beadwork and artistry of an anonymous maker whose wares were part of the early American economy. Although it was acquired on Shinnecock land, the purse may have been made by a Haudenosaunee artist in Upstate New York.

Native communities, displaced off of their ancestral hunting lands and with limited access to their traditionally bountiful waters, adapted their traditional crafts, in this case beadwork, to be sold to non-Natives for cash.

SAVE THE DATE Make a stop at LIM during the Three Village Historical Society and Tri-Spy Tours' annual Culper Spy Day on October 3, 2026 — a village-wide celebration of the Three Villages’ Revolutionary heritage!

Explore our ”The Seat of Action: Long Island in the American Revolution and Beyond” exhibition, where you can view a rare surviving letter dated November 8, 1779, between Benjamin Tallmadge and Robert Townsend, members of Washington’s infamous Culper Spy Ring. You can also see carriages from our collection with ties to Long Island’s Revolutionary War history.

Then, at 1:00 p.m., join us for a fascinating talk with local historian and author Bill Bleyer about the Battle of Long Island, a major defeat for the colonists that could have spelled the end of the Continental Army. On September 2 at 11:00 a.m., join us for a special tour of LIM’s “Long Island in the ’70s” exhibition. Take a nostalgic trip back to one of the most colorful decades in recent history and reminisce about the grooviest decade, filled with good music, funky fashions, iconic pop culture, and unforgettable décor. Join LIM and the Port Jefferson Arts Council for a free screening of Women Laughing (2025) on September 24 at 7:00 p.m.

In this fascinating documentary, longtime New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly explores her lifelong passion for women’s humor and cartooning. Through conversations, laughter, and drawing sessions, she connects with a diverse group of remarkable women who create cartoons for the iconic magazine, including celebrated and groundbreaking cartoonists Roz Chast, Emily Flake, Sarah Akinterinwa, Liana Fink, Amy Hwang, and Bishakh Som. Donnelly also speaks with Emma Allen, The New Yorker’s first female cartoon editor.

Following the film, join us for a discussion with guest speaker Victoria Hughes, a New York-based comic, exploring humor as a tool for storytelling.
