"When crafting objects meant for everyday use, especially in a kitchen or handheld context, I prioritize functionality with balanced design. For objects that primarily remain stationary, I feel more liberated to explore the realm of artistic expression, letting aesthetics take precedence over function. The partnership I demonstrate in my work goes beyond surface textures, shapes, and their roles within the pieces. When people interact with my pottery, they engage in a unique experience that connects the user and the maker. In many ways, I consider each piece unfinished until it is enjoyed in someone’s home." - Miller

Based in Minneapolis, MN, Ernest Miller draws an aesthetic connection between the rural landscapes and the agricultural architecture of the Midwest. His structural ceramics reference weathered barns, rusty silos, and aging farm equipment. Using a variety of techniques to shape each piece, including wheel throwing, paddling, carving, coil building, and slab building, Miller pays particular attention to how light moves across the surface of each vessel. He often creates sharp transitions at the foot of each piece to heighten the sense of depth and weight. The rich surfaces are created by layering slips, glazes, and subtle, repetitive patterns. Firing techniques include both soda and electric kilns to achieve the desired finish.

with Leslie Iwai

Saturday, May 16, 2026 : 1 - 3 PM

Feel Quill is an interactive art installation in which feather quills punctuate cast concrete forming Braille text. During this event Dave Ballmann, a Braille reader, will touch and read texts including Emily Dickinson’s poem, “Hope” is the thing with feathers,” giving others a unique opportunity to see how words are felt.

Free and open to the public.

Following the reading, artist Leslie Iwai .iwai will be in conversation with Dave Ballmann and gallerist Theresa Abel discussing the installation Feel Quill followed by Q&A with the audience. This event will be held on the second floor of the gallery and recorded for later viewing on our website abelcontemporary.com

In addition to work in our current feature shows, new work arrives in the gallery from other artists throughout the season. Recently we recieved work from Ted Neal and Ann Orlowski. This work is available in the gallery and online.

Born and raised in rural upstate New York, Ted Neal has received degrees from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Utah State University, and Brigham Young University Idaho. After graduate school Ted taught as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He moved back to Logan Utah in 2001 to take the position of technology instructor and studio coordinator for the ceramics area at Utah State University. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions across the Unitd States. Ted is currently a studio artist, kiln builder, and has been a Professor of Ceramics in the School of Art at Ball State University in Muncie Indiana since 2006.

Ann Orlowski’s paintings skillfully employ line and color to engage our vision, manipulating our perspective and spatial awareness. Each piece deconstructs the visual world, breaking elements into simplified forms and reconstructing them in new and innovative ways. Her compositions are deliberate, concise, and organized. This methodical approach arises from an interest in problem-solving, as she often works through concepts multiple times to arrive at subtly diverse compositional conclusions. The multiplicity of her work is rooted in her training as a printmaker, where repetition, layering, and a disciplined process served as foundational elements. Throughout her practice, Orlowski translates the three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional plane by incorporating geometric forms that create a sense of volume while using lines to flatten the visual space.
