Stow Historical Society

Stow Historical Society The Stow Historical Society preserves the history of Stow, Ohio, through historic home tours, educational programs and the annual Harvest Festival.

One of the longest-running organizations in Stow, Ohio, the Stow Historical Society was founded by a group of people interested in preserving the history and artifacts of Stow Township. The first meeting of Stow Historical Society was held January 30th, 1950 with 30 charter members. The objective of the society was “to gather and record all historical data pertaining to the development of Stow Tow

nship.”

The Stow Historical Society continues to preserve the history of Stow through its historic home tours and collection of significant local artifacts. School tours give every third grader in Stow a chance to learn about the history of Stow and see up close the belongings of Stow’s early settlers. Members enjoy educational programs at seven member meetings a year. An annual picnic is held in August and an installation of officers luncheon in December. The annual fall Harvest Festival is the Society's main fundraiser.

Such special thanks to Larry Long for leading our Program Meeting with his extensive knowledge of not only his family's history growing up in City of Stow but all about the City, especially around the history of Stow Corners and all of the buildings and businesses around there throughout the years. Larry joked during his presentation that he did not want to go too long (pun intended) but I don't think any of us minded! Thank you again Larry for taking the time to share all of your extensive knowledge of the City he and his family have loved for years!

So grateful to have welcomed Richard Grell to our Stow Historical Society Program Meeting and his remembrances of growing up within and the history of Darrowville. Richard led a talk about all of the prominent families, buildings, businesses and people who lived up and down Darrow Road and Norton Road. We all learned so much from this talk, including so many in attendance whose relatives went back to the beginning of the founding of this area from 1799 through the early 1800's and through all of the 1800's and 1900's. Richard's admiration and remembrance of the Darrow family and specifically Floyd Darrow were quite special. Thank you again Richard for a wonderfully informative talk!

Special thanks to the over 20 attendees to hear our presentation on the history of some of the lives of those in Stow's early years at Maple Lawn Cemetery. Member Teri Siroki put together a wonderful presentation of ten writeups of men and women next to their gravesites with stories of war, tough lives, hardships with families and the context of what it was like in our city in its early years! Thanks especially to Teri, and our speakers, Denny Reiser, Andrew Kaminski, Jill France, Teri and Norm Siroki, Elizabeth Cooper and Tammie Menke...thanks again everyone!

This Monday at 6PM we are pleased to welcome long time member Teri Siroki out at Maple Lawn Cemetery, 4915 Darrow Road, Stow, OH 44224, which is Stow's oldest cemetery to walk us around many important grave stones in Stow's past, with short presentations at each important gravesite. Some are from early settlers, some important military veterans, some average but important citizens of our community from the past, in to the early 1800's! We are looking forward to all of the homework Teri has done for us for this tour of the cemetery
