Join us on Sunday, April 26 at 2:00 pm for "Threads of Enterprise: Prospering in the New Republic"—Sandra Rux presents the life and work of Silas Burton.

Stratford resident Silas Burton (1775–1827) was far more than a weaver. A successful craftsman, reed maker, and teacher, Burton built a thriving business in the early republic while also running a night school for local boys and housing Stratford’s first library.

Researcher Sandra Rux will share new insights into Burton’s life and work using records preserved in the Stratford Historical Society archives, including his account ledger and remarkable weaving draft book—still studied today by historic weaving enthusiasts across the country. The program will also feature examples of Burton’s textiles and pieces created by contemporary weavers inspired by his designs.

After the presentation, samples of Silas Burton's work will be on display and the Captain David Judson House will be open. Make sure to visit our Loom Room and see Joanne Gallagher demonstrate how the looms work!
