The Judson House Historic Gardens

The Judson House Historic Gardens 🌿 Our historical garden grows native plants once used by Indigenous peoples for food, medicine, and tools. Rooted in the past, growing for the future!

Today, they support pollinators and teach visitors about sustainable, historical gardening practices. Part of gardens here are themed, growing plants and herbs that were specific to the colonial era, along with information and education on their uses. Medicinal, culinary, aromatic, and some just for plain beauty. Some that we can and still use to this day. Our other part of the gardens is a beauti

ful Pollinator Demonstration Garden. As we are proudly part of the "Pollinator Pathway", in this garden, we hope to demonstrate and educate others with clear, real-life examples of the valuable services that all our pollinators provide, and how easy it is to support them. We offer public programming that engage and educate our Stratford community and beyond on the importance of our local pollinators, and hopefully, encourage others to create their own pollinator gardens.

Thanks to Aquarion Water Company providing the plants for our new kitchen herb garden, our own Nancy Zychek installing it, and Evan Grey providing the vines, we were able to waddle it up a little bit today! Went out to the "back 40" and got a bunch of saplings for the rest, but that's another day.

What a day at Academy Hill… 🌿

Thank you to everyone who came together to bring our first Gardens Committee project of the year, "Four Corners of Honor" to life. Today’s project coincides with National Park Day, a nationwide initiative led by the American Battlefield Trust, that brings communities together to care for historic and meaningful places like this one.

With the help of Boy Scout Troop 71 - Stratford, Connecticut, members of the Town of Stratford, Beautification Commission, local dignitaries, and dedicated volunteers from the Stratford Historical Society and our Garden Club, 100s of plants were installed in red, white, and blue to honor our Veterans Memorial and in recognition of America’s upcoming 250th.

This was truly a community effort. One that reflects the same spirit of cooperation that has shaped this historic site for generations.

Plants were sourced locally through Shannon Landscape & Garden Center, who assisted us with early-season ordering and availability.

More to come as we share the transformation and the history behind this important location.

🚗🌿 Loaded up and ready to go…

Tomorrow, the Stratford Historical Society launches our first Gardens Committee community project **Four Corners of Honor** at the Veterans Memorial on Academy Hill.

This effort is part of **Park Day**, a nationwide volunteer initiative organized by the American Battlefield Trust that brings communities together to care for historic sites, preserve local history, and keep these important places accessible for future generation.
Here in Stratford, we’ll be transforming the four planting beds surrounding the memorial into a living tribute using red, white, and blue plantings honoring those who served, while preparing for the America 250 commemoration.

🗓 Saturday
⏰ Core Volunteers gathering at the Stratford Historical Society at 9:00 AM for staging (planting begins around 10:30 AM) work site is just across the street at the memorial
We’ll have Boy Scouts, community members, and volunteers working together to bring this project to life.

If you’re in the area, feel free to stop by, say hello, or lend a hand.
Gloves and hand tools welcome we’ll have water available.
