Patrick County History Museum

Patrick County History Museum The museum displays hundreds of items relating to the history of Patrick County Virginia, and is a resource for genealogists seeking their family roots.

The museum is located in the same building as the Patrick County Branch Library, about a block west of the old courthouse. It holds displays of old tools, textiles, military equipment, household goods, local documents, photographs, Indian artifacts and much more ... most of them donated by members of the local community. For genealogists, there is a small library of family histories, indexes to le

gal records, and other books related to families that often go back to the first European settlement of this area. Our staff can often help people find their Patrick County connections from long ago. The museum is run by the Patrick County Historical Society, a non-profit volunteer organization, plus one part-time staff person. The Society also partners with the Reynolds Homestead in nearby Critz to present "History Around Us" talks every other month, and has at least one big meeting each year for the general public, featuring an author or speaker on some historical topic. Admission to the museum and these programs is free. Interested people can become members of the museum for $10 per year, or $20 for a family, or $100 for a life membership.

This coming Sunday, 11/16/25, at the History Museum (Library) in Stuart. Mark your calendars! Refreshments. Free!

Patrick County Historical Society
General Membership Meeting Program to
Feature Revolutionary War Soldiers on
Sunday, November 16, at 2:30 p.m.
In observance of our nation’s 250th
Anniversary, its “Semi-quincentennial,” the
Historical Society will host members of the
local Sons of the American Revolution (SAR)
portraying soldiers who served in the war for
American independence from Great Britain.
Weather permitting, a typical soldier’s camp
from that period will be set up in front of the
museum-library building at 116 West Blue
Ridge Street in Stuart. Members of the SAR
will be dressed in various uniforms with all the
accoutrements that would have been used by
soldiers of that period.
This is a great opportunity for children and
adults to see history “come alive,” and we
hope many of you living in the area will come
out to enjoy the demonstration.
In the case of inclement weather, the SAR
members will be there regardless to talk about
and demonstrate how soldiers lived and fought.

After representing the Patrick County Historical Society by speaking to a Seniors luncheon group, it was grand to stop by the Museum and talk with two out of state visitors who were exploring their PC roots. Always great to see Kayla, who makes all our visitors feel at home!

The Patrick County Historical Society's annual general meeting will be held this Sunday, November 12th, at the Museum at 2 p.m. As usual we will elect board members for the coming year, but the main point of interest will be a talk by Gloria Barbour about growing up black in a segregated Patrick County during the years in which it transitioned into a more-or-less integrated place. Ms. Barbour attended Patrick Central during its years as the county's colored High School, and eventually went on to work at the Martinsville Library, where many of you may have seen her over the years. We will provide light refreshments afterwards. The general public, as well as museum members, are welcome to attend.

The Patrick County Historical Society will host a public meeting on Sunday May 21 for a talk by T. Mills Kelly about his newly published book, "Virginia's Lost Appalachian Trail". This is an Arcadia paperback book, with lots of pictures, covering the original location of the trail in southwest Virginia from 1930 till 1952, before it was relocated 50 miles to the west. As such, I imagine that Mr. Kelly will have something to say about its path over the Pinnacles of Dan and other local sites. The meeting will start at 2:30 at the museum, and people will be able to buy copies of this book if they desire.

The Historical Society's annual General Membership meeting will take place on Sunday November 13, at 2:00 P.M.
