Celebrating National Wildlife Day!

After so many years observing wildlife, I’m still grateful every time I have an opportunity to see an animal in its natural environment. So much of what I create begins with watching an animal move, noticing its behavior and character, and bringing those observations back into the studio.

On National Wildlife Day, I’m especially thankful for the wildlife that has inspired a lifetime of sculptures and paintings. With that appreciation also comes a calling to protect these animals and the wild places they depend on.

The Final Touch

After all the time spent sculpting, I finally get to see the eagle as I imagined it.

At the foundry, heat and different chemicals are carefully applied to the bronze to create the patina, bringing out the color and detail of the sculpture.

Observation into Oil

After spending so much of my life out on the water observing wildlife, nature can still surprise me. Off Bathtub Beach, Florida, I came across more sharks migrating than I ever expected to see. It was one of those moments I knew I wanted to bring back into the studio.

The footage above was recorded during that experience and became the inspiration for my oil painting, Top of the Reef.

Not a Silver King Without Scales

One by one, I hand-made every scale for this tarpon sculpture. It takes a lot of time and patience to build so many individual scales, but together they make this fish unmistakably a tarpon. From the first scale in clay to the finished bronze sculpture, every detail matters.

How do you measure the time that goes into a sculpture when every hour in the studio is backed by a lifetime of observing wildlife?

One step at a time.

This bronze conch is being carefully polished at the foundry, where my original clay sculpture is transformed into bronze and carefully refined before it's complete. As the surface begins to catch the light, I can finally begin to see the sculpture I imagined while it was still just clay.

Every painting begins with paying attention.

This windswept palm along Florida's coast inspired my "Palm Tree of the Rocks" oil painting. I've found that the best ideas rarely begin in the studio. They begin by paying attention to the natural world and noticing moments that others might pass by.

An Encounter I'll Never Forget.

This life size sculpture was inspired by my encounter with a 13-foot bull alligator along the swamps of Lake Okeechobee, Florida. Through this piece, I wanted to share what I experienced that day and to bring people closer to one of the Everglades' most remarkable reptiles.

From nature to the studio.

For me, every wildlife painting begins long before I set up the easel. Spending time in nature, whether from the shore, on a paddleboard, or through the lens of a drone, gives me a chance to observe animals in ways most people never see.

There's nothing like watching manatees glide through the water with effortless grace. With every stroke of the palette knife, I wanted to capture that sense of peace, movement, and connection that I witnessed on the water.
