Virginia Davis was with Walt Disney from the very beginning, in Kansas City. At his soon-to-end Laugh-O-Grams Studio, Walt hired Virginia to play Alice in a new film series. Fleischer had a popular series with animated characters coming out of an inkwell into the real world. Walt flipped the script to have Alice, a live girl, in an animated world. He was only able to complete half of a test film, but that was enough to secure a distribution deal and found the Disney Brothers Studio. Virginia moved to Los Angeles and starred as Alice in the first 14 Alice Comedies.

In our Disney Studio and Pop Culture Legends auction, we have the honor of presenting Davis' personal keepsakes, her actual Disney Legend award, and her "Alice the Peacemaker" original poster, one of the rarest surviving movie posters.

Meet Ralph Hammeras…

Ralph Hammeras is one of the unsung greats of the early motion picture industry. As early as 1916, he was working on miniatures and special effects in silent movies, and by 1925 received a patent for a paint-on-glass technique we now know as glass matte painting. He was nominated in the very first Academy Awards in 1928, and worked with Charlie Chaplin on "The Great Dictator." Hammeras is credited as an Effects Photographer for "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," but in his memoir, Disney Legend Peter Ellenshaw named Ralph as the head of visual effects for the film. Fortunately, Hammeras kept an extensive scrapbook, retaining programs, news clippings, Studio ID cards, original concept paintings and many more incredible artifacts from his amazing career.
