🎉 New exhibitions opening this week!

Join us this Friday evening, Sept. 18 from 5 - 7 pm at the Miller Art Museum for an evening of contemporary art, live music, and light refreshments.

Explore new exhibitions across our galleries, including ‘Emmett Johns | Transcending Time,’ a solo exhibition of abstract paintings by the celebrated Door County artist, and our ‘51st Juried Annual,’ featuring contemporary work from artists working across the State of Wisconsin. Also on view is Lauren Semivan’s photography, part of the museum’s ongoing ’12 x 12 Project.’

✨ Free and open to all | Both exhibitions on view through November 7. Lauren Semivan’s work can be viewed through September 30.

Regular museum hours resume on Saturday. Open 10 am - 7 pm Mon., and 10 am - 5 pm Tue. - Sat., and closed Sunday.

Dome House Al & Mickey Quinlan artist-in-residence Juan Carlos Rodríguez Rivera’s recent workshop, held in the Dome House (also referred to as the Hobbit House or Mushroom House), called attention to the life of a flower and the impact flowers have on people.

“This line of questioning came from looking at flowers as something delicate and strong, like the contrast in a flower,” Rodríguez Rivera said. “But also when I was working with flowers, I started thinking about the labor [it takes] to get the flowers to the market – people growing them, people cutting them – this cycle to get the flower to my hand.”

Join artist Lauren Semivan, whose ‘False Twilight’ series is featured during the month of September as part of our 12 x 12 project, for a conversation facilitated by Curator of Exhibitions and Collections Suzanne Rose this Saturday, Sept. 12 at 4pm. The talk will be followed by a free public reception.

Working with a large-format view camera, Semivan builds ethereal constructed environments to create photographs that blur the line between the physical world and something more interior and unseen. Join us for this opportunity to hear directly from the artist about her process and practice.

Lauren Semivan (b. 1981) is an American artist working between her studios in Manitowoc and Appleton, Wisconsin. She holds a BFA in Studio Art from Lawrence University and an MFA in Photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Cranbrook Art Museum, Blue Sky Gallery, Silver Eye Center for Photography, the Museum of Wisconsin Art, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Hunterdon Art Museum, and Paris Photo. Her photographs are held in the permanent collections of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Cranbrook Art Museum, the Wriston Art Galleries at Lawrence University, Cassilhaus, North Carolina, and the Sir Elton John Photography Collection. She is represented by Benrubi Gallery in New York, David Klein Gallery in Detroit, and The Portrait Society Gallery for Contemporary Art in Milwaukee.

✨ NOW ON VIEW ✨

The work of 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗻 is now featured in the Museum's ongoing invitational ’12x12 Project’ series spotlighting contemporary artists from Wisconsin and the greater Midwest.

On view through September 30, the exhibit features a selection from 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘦 𝘛𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, a recent body of work by Semivan whose large-format photographic practice constructs temporary studio environments where drawing, painting, and found objects converge. Working with an early twentieth-century 8×10 view camera, Semivan builds environments that exist only long enough to be photographed before they are dismantled or transformed into future work—constructing spaces where abstraction and representation coexist, guided as much by time and intuition as by intention.

"In an age conditioned by speed, Lauren's work asks for the rarity of sustained attention," says Curator of Exhibitions and Collections Suzanne Rose. "The longer we remain with these photographs, the more they unlock our imagination.”

Four days until we officially welcome Juan Carlos Rodríguez Rivera as our 2026 Al & Mickey Quinlan Dome House Artist in Residence! 🎉

Juan Carlos is a Detroit-based artist, designer, and educator whose work explores diasporic identity and the landscapes he inhabits—moving between image-making, print, installation, and sculpture. During his residency, he'll be developing new work inspired by the Door Peninsula, in dialogue with his ongoing project 'Becoming Post-Tropical.’

Come meet him in person this Saturday! Juan Carlos Rodríguez Rivera Opening Celebration + Artist Talk | Saturday, August 15 | 4–6 PM. Free and open to the public.
