On today's feature of the Arkansas Delta Byways we are highlighting the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum & Educational Center and the Matilda and Karl Peiffer Museum in Piggott.

Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum & Educational Center is housed in the home of Paul and Mary Pfeiffer. Paul Pfeiffer, a successful business man from St. Louis, and his wife, Mary, moved their family to Piggott in 1913. His daughter, Pauline, was Ernest Hemingway's second wife. Hemingway and Pauline would visit often and stay with Paul and Mary. The Pfeiffers converted their barn into a writing studio where Hemingway wrote a portion of his classic work A Farewell to Arms. The writing studio is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Matilda & Karl Pfeiffer Museum & Study Center encompasses the home and grounds of the home built by Karl, the son of Paul and Mary Pfeiffer. The museum includes and extensive mineral and geode collection and 11 acres of natural gardens.

Check out deltabyways.com for other attractions to see when you road trip to Piggott!

After the Bible, what was one of the most common books found in a home, like our Prairie Cabin, in the early 1900s?

The Sears Roebuck & Co. Catalogue!

The Catalogue (early issues featured the British spelling) became one of the most popular sources for meeting the needs of Prairie farms and homes when Rural Free Delivery came to the Grand Prairie on August 15, 1900. Thousands of products were available from clothing, jewelry, household items, farm equipment, and even homes a family could build from a kit!

Like our Amazon of today, Sears Roebuck & Co. brought the world to your doorstep. Did you ever order anything from The Catalogue?

On this date in 1903 , H. Nelson Jackson and his mechanic, Sewall Crocker, left San Francisco on a road trip with New York as their destination. According to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, Jackson and Crocker completed their 64-day trip in a 1903 Winton touring car.

While we don't have a 1903 Winton Touring Car in our collection, one of the cars in our collection is 1925/26 Chevrolet Superior Series K 4-Door Sedan. A family could purchase one of these stylish rides for $825. The museum received this beauty from Mark Townend.

Come see the other automobiles in our collection. We are open Tuesday - Saturday until 4 pm.
