Nationwide, most interurban railways were powered by direct current. The Visalia Electric Railroad wasn't one of them.

Fueled by ambitious expansion plans, they chose alternating current to power their trains. Electrified at 3,300V 15 Hz, AC enabled them to run trains for longer distances without building frequent, costly substations. However, it was rudimentary and temperamental — especially as DC advanced in popularity.

By 1944, the costs would result in the railroad's de-electrification. Diesel locomotives replaced the system. One of them, Visalia Electric #502, is now preserved and operational at our museum.

Can you imagine riding a train to nowhere? If so, you'll picture the Petaluma & Santa Rosa RR's Two Rock branch.

Opened on July 28th, 1913, this 5-mile branch ran through lush, lonely rolling hills to Two Rock, a tiny farming hamlet. Due to its rural nature, the line often carried more eggs, chickens, and milk cans than riders — exemplified in 1925 when it only produced $27 in monthly ticket revenue!

Attempts to extend the branch to Tomales and Dillon Beach never materialized. Consequently, on September 20th, 1925, passenger service would be abandoned. Lucrative freight would continue until 1952!

🔧 Progress was made on Kennecott Copper #407!

Over the weekend, youth volunteers prepped and cleaned #407's massive pantograph for repairs. After decades of rusting outside, it needs a lot of work — which is why this phase is so important!

Climbing out of the Key System Subway, a Bay Area Electric RR Association excursion rolls past a railfan photo line in Emeryville — July 8, 1956.

Behind #1005 is Salt Lake & Utah #751, a parlor-observation car BAERA bought in 1949 specifically for their excursions!

Built by the Niles Car Company in 1916, #751 was a staple on trains like the "Zion Limited," which flew through the countryside between Salt Lwke City, Provo, and Payson! It was rebuilt in 1917 after a steam engine T-boned it — its reinforced frame becoming a deciding factor in BAERA's purchase of #751!

Today, #751 is still a staple on the rails. You can find it running regularly during our special events!
