1000 Indian Textile Artists

1000 Indian Textile Artists Showcasing some incredible Indian Textile Artists, aspire to create a pan India directory

07/18/2023

We have a very special treat planned for this page on Friday as we meet with the keeper of the Kanjeevaram Legacy, B Krishnamoorthy, a National award-winning master weaver, who has created a repository of Kanjeevaram patterns, designs and motifs.
Watch him give us a crash course in everything Kanjeevaram - what is a classical Kanjivaram, what is korvai? what is petni? what are the traditional motifs? what are the traditional borders? Learn from a genuine master. You would not want to miss this as you will have an interaction with the most genuine authentic source of Kanjeevaram knowledge.
Mr Krishnamoorthy is a self-made archivist and educationist, he weaves up many reference catalogues. The design notebooks of this National Award winner are filled with drawings, over ten thousand of them, of parrots and peacocks, an army of elephants and horses; stunning variations of coins, lines, leaves and flowers; and the mythical yali—part lion, part elephant, part horse.
Organized with Tapan Sharma from the Weavers Service Center and Meenu Iyer

Artist 6/1000: Lubna Mirza/ Ahsan Mirza, Shawl Story
Najibabad, Uttar Pradesh

Shawlstory is a luxury clothing brand, founded by Ms. Lubna Mirza, which is committed to slow fashion and powered by the “Rafoogar” community of artisans from Najibabad. They are the descendants of Muslim artisans (with Persian origins) who migrated to Kashmir with the Mughals and later settled in the Gangetic plains.

Starting out as restorers of magnificent Kashmiri shawls, the Rafoogars have progressed over the years.

Mr. Ahsan Mirza, Lubna’s father-in-law, is an award-winning craftsman who inherited this heritage from his maternal uncles. Together with the community of artisans, they restore Kashmiri Jamewar shawls and other textiles.
Lubna Mirza is a graduate in Mass Communication who carved her niche in customer relationships while working for HCL but one who always had an interest in handcrafted artifacts, soon found her calling in carrying forwarding her in-laws’ 240 years old family heirlooms of restoring and refurbishing ancient kashmiri kani Jamawars and other shawls in Najibabad.

But she wanted the craft to speak for itself through a brand that positions Najibabad on the global supply chain of contemporary lifestyle and empowers her Rafoogar community's artisans! Thus, Shawl Story came into being.
Her success mantra is a combination of “Preserve & Progress”.

Artist 2/1000: Majid Mir
Kani Weaving, Kashmir
Majid Mir comes from a family that has been associated with the painstaking Kani weaving tradition for centuries. Majid brought in innovation in the craft by combining the artistic traditions of Kani weaving and calligraphy.
"My brother and I initiated calligraphy weaving in Pashmina. It all started when we visited the National Museum in New Delhi where we were exposed to the references. We liked it and that got us to experiment with calligraphy which was built across as an innovative technique. Our forefathers taught us basic weaving techniques as they used to only do plain weaving and dress materials. Developing calligraphy was considered one of the toughest techniques in the world but over a period of time, we gained great insight doing ‘hands on’ and developed many complex variations of calligraphy weaving, especially Urdu calligraphy. We can now weave any font using this technique. We have also revived many old techniques of Pashmina"
Kani weaving is done with small spindles and is a very intricate craft that requires a lot of patience and mastery. A pashmina Kani weaving shawls is one of the toughest weaving traditions in the world and a shawl takes months or years to weave.
The Government of India honoured Majid with a National award in 2010. He won the State Award in 2004 and a Gold medal for excellence in Arts and Crafts in 2014.

#1000 Masters
I have a vision of having an open source pan India directory available to everyone of India's textile artists with a view that people can associate the artist with their work, give a face to the artist and also to facilitate more work for the artists.
This is a personal passion project of mine and I would love any help I can get on it.
You can help in multiple ways
1. Volunteer to collect and verify artists profiles
2. Help with social media posts highlighting the artists
3. Sending in nominations of artists you know
4. Nominating yourself as an artist to be profiled.
The details I need are
1. Artist name, contact details and photograph
2. Artist social media profile if any
3. Brief writeup ( not more than 250 words) of their specialization
6-8 samples of the artist's work
4. Any commendations the artist has got so far. We want to widen the net and not just look at the artists that have won awards
