City of Sun Prairie Museum

City of Sun Prairie Museum Welcome to the Sun Prairie Historical Library & Museum's page! The building has been home to the Sun Prairie Historical Library & Museum since 1969.

We connect Sun Prairie with its history, cultivating community pride and shared knowledge. Built in 1924 on the site of the original Bird family home (our first settlers in 1840), this Georgian Revival style building was originally the area’s first public library. After it was a library, it also served as Village Council Chambers, City offices, and the original Colonial Club Senior Center. During

WWII, the Club Room in the lower level of the Public Library was turned into a Red Cross Center where volunteers rolled bandages for surgical supply boxes and held community blood drives.

Today we said goodbye to the Museum’s full-time staff, Sunshine and Katie. Thank you to all the friends who visited during open hours! 👋

We are grateful to the people of Sun Prairie for allowing us to serve the community through research, tours, field trips, presentations, and stewarding of the collections. At the heart of the operation were our volunteers, each bringing a unique and valuable skillset to the team. ❤️

Don't forget- tomorrow night!

Join the Sun Prairie City Clerks at City Hall tomorrow from 3:00-6:00pm to learn more about the election process and the equipment used both today and in the past. See you there!

*REMINDER: ELECTION OPEN HOUSE*

Don't forget, the City Clerk's Office is hosting an election open house on Tuesday, January 6th at City Hall from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM.

You're invited to come and learn more about the election process and equipment. The city's electronic pollbooks, DS200 Tabulators, and ExpressVote machines will be set up and ready to interact with. The Clerk’s Office staff will be available to answer any questions.

Ahead of a busy election year, staff will also be able to assist you in registering you to vote or request absentee ballots. Registration forms will be available in English, Hmong, and Spanish with bilingual staff available to assist.

The Clerk's Office has also been working with the Sun Prairie Historical Library & Museum to gather some historic election materials to display including an automatic voting machine with an instruction manual from 1947, last used in Sun Prairie in 1995. The photo shown in this post is from an election to determine if the Village of Sun Prairie should become a City in 1958!

Come and celebrate elections and learn more about how we administer them in Sun Prairie. We'll see you on Tuesday!
