Today we were with Ann Wolfe for a panel discussion. Thank you to everyone who made it out for this and to everyone who made this possible. đź’śđź’śđź’ś

We invite you to The Art of Jean LaMarr—Panel Conversation with activist-artist Jean LaMarr (Susanville Indian Rancheria) and Nevada Museum of Art Associate Director and Chief Curator Ann Wolfe tomorrow, Saturday, August 19, 9:15–10:15 am. This panel conversation, held in the Allan Houser Art Park at the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA) in downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico, will delve into LaMarr’s artistic practices, inspirations, and the powerful messages behind her work.

The discussion accompanies her solo exhibition, The Art of Jean LaMarr, a retrospective of LaMarr’s artwork showcasing her colorful and seductive yet hard-hitting satirical artworks challenging long-held cultural stereotypes and preconceptions about Native American people and cultures. The exhibition will be on view from August 18, 2023, through January 7, 2024.

This event is free and open to the public, learn more at www.iaia.edu/event/the-art-of-jean-lamarr-panel-conversation.

Today was the opening reception in Santa Fe! Thank you IAIA for hosting this exhibition and to Ann Wolf and the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno for curating.

Please join us tomorrow, Friday, August 18, 5–7 pm for The Art of Jean LaMarr—Opening Reception, celebrating our newest exhibition at the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA) in downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico. This traveling exhibition, organized by the Nevada Museum of Art (NMA), features more than 60 artworks, including paintings, prints, and sculptures spanning from the 1970s to the present, and is on view in three galleries at our museum.

We invite everyone to wear purple for the opening reception to celebrate Jean LaMarr (Susanville Indian Rancheria) and her work! Purple is not only Jean LaMarr’s color of choice—it has also become an integral part of her identity, as she was given the name “Pahime Gutne” (purple flower).

“Her work has that razor-sharp political commentary, yet can transmit the softness and beauty of our cultures, particularly of Indigenous women,” says Dr. Debra Harry (Kooyooe Tukadu Numu from Pyramid Lake), Associate Professor of Indigenous Studies in the Department of Gender, Race, and Identity at the University of Nevada, Reno.

This event is free and open to the public, learn more at www.iaia.edu/event/the-art-of-jean-lamarr-opening-reception.

Thank you to everyone at the Boise Art Museum !

This weekend is your last chance to experience “The Art of Jean LaMarr.” This retrospective exhibition features paintings, prints, and sculptures by LaMarr - Fine Artist & Printmaker, an internationally recognized artist, educator, and Native American advocate. For decades her work has sparked powerful and important conversations about cultural stereotypes, representations of Native women, legacies of colonization, and environmental justice. Born in Susanville, California, LaMarr is of Northern Paiute and Pit River ancestry with family ties to Pyramid Lake, Nevada.
This exhibition is organized by Nevada Museum of Art

Happy Earth Day from the Boise Art Museum! We are inspired today by Jean LaMarr’s many artworks that address topics of environmental justice. This print, “I Heard the Song of My Grandmother,” honors the wisdom of Indigenous Elders across the Americas while also referencing an intrusive act she witnessed at the time, as numerous helicopters were circling over the city of L.A. spraying insecticide to eradicate crop-destroying medflies. “Even with all the chaos, we must find our peace,” LaMarr says of the message this screenprint is intended to convey. “We can’t become part of the chaos; we must remain one with the land.”

Visit the Museum to see more artwork on display inspired by the natural world. We are open today from 10 a.m – 5 p.m.
