Hanford St. Gallery is very sorry to announce that we have had to cancel our 2014 show schedule. The recurrence of effects from an old injury makes it difficult to give the gallery the effort and attention the artist’s work deserves. We very much appreciate our artist’s willingness to show with us and regret that we cannot continue; but, retiring from the field seems the better part of valor.
We will remain open thru late January, Thu/Fri/Sat, from Noon to 5pm with all remaining art on sale at 25% off and good prices on office/art supplies and furnishings. The gallery space will be available for rent soon.
The many new friends we have made these last three years have been a delight and we are very grateful for the support we have received.
Thanks to all and may you have a very HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Mad Brad Returns

While studying archeology in the early 60's Brad Devereaux's exposure to the counterculture was inevitable. The influence persists today. From exploring ancient civilizations he moved to the inner psyche as a mental health worker all the while savoring the world of the coffeehouse. Not today's drive-thru non-stop caffeine purveyor but the sort of place with an atmosphere of inquiry and contemplation. The kind of place where cynicism is tempered with art, poetry and music. Over his 16 years as a clinical social worker Brad developed a deep appreciation of the importance of interpersonal communication and an equally deep desire to explore visual art as a pathway for that communication.

"Eventually I understood my calling to be an artist; but for a long time I held onto my job in social work out of sense of duty."
Finally he made the commitment to art full time. Brad's paints might be laid down on a stretched canvas or just as likely on something constructed from scraps found around his workshop/studio. Bright colors and wild patterns eventually resolve into something you recognize. Something from the everyday world or discovered in your innermost depths. Neither strictly representational or abstract, his work is designed to evoke a response from the viewer.

"It is meaningful for me when people pause for a moment and search for an awareness of their own reactions when viewing my work. Whatever someone finds in one of my pieces is OK with me if they have honestly attempted to truly see what might be there."

Opening October 3rd at the Hanford St. Gallery in Sutter Creek, the show will run through October 27. There will be a reception for the artist on Oct. 5th from 4 to 7pm as part of the Amador 1st Saturday Art Trek.

All Things Mechanical
Sharon Galligan at Hanford St. Gallery

The machine as art? Why not - if "Art" is "anything done well" and if we can look beyond a bit of dirt and grease we can find the beauty that is there. Sharon Galligan has painted fields and flowers for years but also has taken up the challenge of looking closely at the wheels and gears that help our world go around. Her tightly framed watercolors achieve a sense of the abstract through acute observation and realistic rendering. Painting a steam locomotive or a wine press she captures the essence of the driving forces that make modern life possible.

"I am particularly fascinated with painting sections of machinery, with its wonderful textures and almost abstract light and dark patterns."

Coupled with acrylic paintings by Nancy Roberts, oils by Paula Lloyd, photos by Donald Satterlee & W.A. Herrick, sculpture by Duane LaMoureaux, shadow boxes by Walter Martin, tools, mold patterns and working machines this show will help us find the "Art" in All Things Mechanical.

Opening September 5th, with a reception for the artists on Saturday Sept. 7 from 4 to 7pm the show will run through September 29 at the Hanford St. Gallery. The gallery is located at 291 Hanford St. in Sutter Creek (next to the Days Inn Motel) and is open Thursday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm.

"Turned Wood"

For July the Hanford St. Gallery will be presenting a collection of unique and beautiful wood turnings by area artist Mike Mahoney.
A professional wood turner since 1994, Mike's bowls are featured in galleries across the United States and his work is sought after by collectors around the world.
Mahoney is passionate about his craft and the American Craft movement. Dedicated to producing quality work and educating the public about woodturning, Mike is often requested to demonstrate and teach for wood turning clubs, craft schools and symposia. He has traveled around the world to discuss and demonstrate his craft, and is considered an authority in woodturning.
Much of the wood Mike uses comes from urban sources (tree trimmers and local cities) and he is even utilizing grapevine culled from local vineyards. All his work is produced on the lathe without any embellishments after the fact. He creates a very traditional feel using contemporary ideas.
"I want my work to be attractive as well as useful. For my work to be admired is one thing, but for my work to be used fulfills my purpose as a craftsman."
Coupled with paintings and photos by Lynn Slade, Daniel D'Agostini, Dianne Poinski and Donald Satterlee, the exhibit will celebrate the visual and tactile pleasures of wood and the trees and forests that provide it.

Opening on Friday, July 5th, the show will run through Sunday, July 28. There will be a reception to introduce the artists on Saturday, July 6th from 4 to 7pm as part of the Amador 1st Saturday Art Trek.

Flowers in Many Media
Georgia O'Keefe once observed that
"Everyone has many associations with a flower - the idea of flowers. You put out your hand to touch the flower - lean forward to smell it - maybe touch it with your lips almost without thinking - or give it to someone to please them. Still in a way - nobody sees a flower - really - it is so small - we haven't time - and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time."
Hanford St. Gallery invites you to take some time to enjoy a wide variety of approaches to how one can see a flower. Anticipating the full blossoming of the coming warm weather we have asked local and regional artists working in a wide range of mediums to bring us their special insights. Flowers in photographs, oils, acrylics, watercolors and collage; flowers sculpted in glass or interpreted in fabric, real flowers, silk ones even paper ones all come together in one grand splash.

Opening April 4th with a reception for the artists on Saturday, April 6 from 4 to 7pm the show will run until Sunday, April 28. Participating artists include George Ann Bowers, Sarah Dixon, Linda Erfle, Annie Fountain, Alice Friederichs, Sharon Galligan, Krista Glavich, Lois Tucker Herrick, Al Herrick, Heather Hopman, David Hopman, Barbara Lee, Vicky Matulich, Dianne Poinski, Sandra Poteet, Lynn Slade, Katherine Venturelli and Nolan Winkler.

David Camardo at Hanford St. Gallery
February 28 - March 31, 2013

For March, Hanford St. Gallery is presenting a Retrospective of the art of David Camardo. You might know him as the fellow who can shoe your horse or perhaps as a star of the competitive Bocce Ball court. What you might not have known is his deep involvement in painting and sculpture and the large body of artwork he has produced over the last the 50 years.

Starting with studio still life, progressing to plein air landscapes and lately back in the studio his painting can be found in a number of private collections and several have been made available for this showing for the first time in many years. Painting in the Bay Area, Amador County and Provence, France David prefers the morning light and in one series made some 30 paintings of the town of Volcano.

As a sculptor David has produced work in bronze, wood, French limestone, alabaster, and Carrara marble. We will be privileged to enjoy over twenty pieces, large and small, from both the artist's and other collections.

We are announcing new gallery hours (not too different.)

Beginning January 31, 2013 our hours will be:

11am – 5pm Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday

A call to artists who draw and keep a sketchbook,

As you may have heard we are forging ahead with an Artist's Sketchbook Show in February (January 31 - February 24, 2013.)

We are waiting for a reply from Queen Elizabeth regarding loan of a Leonardo Da Vinci Codex from the Windsor Castle collection. In the meantime we would like to start bringing in work for the show.

The gallery will be closed and we will be vacationing from January 3rd through 23rd so there will not be much time to pull things together before the opening. To rationalize the process it would be a big help to have your entries in hand this month; so...could we induce you to bring in one to three sketchbooks before the end of the holidays? Working drawings for specific projects, travel diaries , your idea book for someday projects or even a collection of back of envelope doodles might all be of interest.

If you would like to participate you will need to consider the following points:

1. Will you want the public to handle the sketchbooks or will you prefer to have them open and under glass?

2. Do you want to make any parts of the books (or prints from the books) available for sale? (We can provide scan and print service for work up to about 9" x 13".)

3. Do you have any finished art based on something in a sketchbook that could be shown alongside (for sale or not as you choose?)

At a minimum we need your commitment to participate and some indication of what you will be submitting (books, drawings, framed art, how many, what sizes, etc.) Please be aware that if we get a large number of artists submitting work, it may become necessary to jury the entries but at this time we have no idea how many will want to participate.

Looking forward to working with you.

Al & Lois
