Thank you Milena Chiari @ Daily Orange for sharing this part of our Art Story 🙏🙏

“When you come to Syracuse, you check into that hotel, you look across the street, first thing you see is local art.” The MIDOMA Interactive Street Galleries push local art past traditional spaces to build a larger “art scene” in Syracuse.

art haus SYR is proud to re-introduce Marc-Anthony Polizzi as part of our“SMÖRGÅSBORD” group exhibition.
About the Artist:
“My work uses a process of deconstruction and unification to examine the world of chaos and noise created in the wake of existence. Through the use of discarded objects and things once loved, I attempt to bring balance to my environment and silence the inner panic caused by the crushing weight of consumerism and modern culture.”

About the Artist:
Charles Hodge III (1963, NJ, United States) makes paintings, abstractions and drawings. By applying abstraction, C J creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of images from the past using iconic and at times amusing symbolism luring the viewer round and round in circles.
His paintings often refer to pop and mass culture and how they fit into our lives. Using written and drawn symbols and words, a world where light-heartedness rules and where rules are undermined is created. Several reoccurring subject matter can be recognized, such as the relation with popular culture and media, working with repetition, provocation and the investigation of the process. Mirth and deeper meaning often walk together hand in hand in his paintings.
His works often do not show the complete structure but let the viewer complete the image. Often iconic images are used in a manner never intended by their creators. This results in the fact that the artist can easily imagine an own interpretation without being hindered by the historical reality. By using popular themes such as sexuality, family and violence, he tries to increase the dynamic between audience and author by objectifying emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations.
His works reference recognizable form and change them to new interpretations. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted.
C J’s work can be viewed on many levels, all of them interesting and thought provoking.

From the Artist:
My painting began with icons — buffalo, sacred hearts, barbed wire and flame. Those early images were grounded in the devotional, in repetition, in the tangible. Over time the figures loosened, the forms broke open, and the work became something less defined and more honest.
Barbed wire has stayed. It first appeared in a Sacred Heart painting I made years ago and never left, showing up now as a mark, a border, a scar across the canvas. I think it means something about the places we protect and the places we can’t enter.
These paintings are built in acrylic and mixed media, layering gesture, mark, and collaged fragment until something essential emerges. Small figures move through abstract fields of color and line that feel simultaneously urban, atmospheric, and interior. Purple runs through the work emotionally. The paintings sit somewhere between chaos and structure, never quite resolving.

From the Artist:
I started painting on boxes in 2020 or so as a way to make portable diorama housings for standout specimens from my vintage space toy collection. Along the way I got very taken by the idea of painting these small four to eight inch “craft” boxes as a substitute for more traditional surfaces. I like how they bring all three dimensions into play: One is harmonizing nine surfaces intersecting at right angles, ten if you count the back. The painting immediately began spilling out onto the sides of the boxes and underneath. The boxes are likely meant to be held, or at least picked up and examined from time to time. Hanging fixtures are always included but the bottoms are all heavily sealed with acrylic gel so they can be placed on a shelf or tabletop.

I try to avoid traditional drawing as much as possible allow the imagery to take shape over time as the materials accrete onto the surfaces. Usually starting with a few smudges or smears which then get outlined. From those forms are suggested, with topographic relief maps or other forms of textured satellite imagery likely inspiring how the sections flow into each other, and want the results to look like a hybrid of painting and ceramics. I don’t see the imagery as abstract but geographical in nature, hills and valleys, likely based on the golf course across the street, which I can see through the window while painting.

As the winter has ebbed into spring colors are seeping into what had been masses of crackled ice and frozen CNY puddle stains. Now becoming stretches of grass with life returning. The world thawing itself out in real time. I’ll still use the space bling when the right ideas come together but have gotten more out of challenging myself to make beautiful little paintings on the boxes. Which is in itself something new for me as an artist: Making something meant to be beautiful, on purpose.

From the Artist:
“The streets of urban environments offer an abundance of material from the banal to the unusual from which I compose my photographs. While my work has often been categorized in the photographic genre of “urban landscape”, my work branches out beyond that traditional classification. Most often, my images are bereft of people, and offer a consideration of formality in creating their composition. My intent is to identify and bring attention to patterns, shapes and lines that may escape the ordinary eye. My images are a result of intuition and multi-sensory experience. “

“We look at the world and we see what we have learned to believe is there. We have been conditioned to expect, but as photographers, we must learn to relax our beliefs.” (Aaron Siskind)

From the Artist:
What is memory?
What is it that allows our brain to recall the feel of the sun on our shoulders, the smell of the ocean at low tide, the hiss of water rushing over rocks, and the soft shades of color on a rainy morning.
This is the start of my drawings. The intention is to convey the real and imagined sensations of the transient environment we experience into a piece of art.
They provide us a reminder of a moment, and a prompt to continue to consider the experience.

From the Artist:
“My practice is really about figuring out who I am in real time.
I see identity as something you build, question, and redefine over and over—not something fixed.
I work mostly in acrylic, layering in chalk pastel, gold leaf, and textured elements that add a subtle elevation to the canvas.
Surfaces should feel intentional but not overly polished—there should be friction there.

Scale matters to me.

I’m focusing on working large because I want the painting to feel like a presence in the room, not just something decorative.
The texture, the matte finish, the raised forms—they’re all part of that experience.
Conceptually, I’m exploring self-definition, spiritual autonomy, and what it means to claim your own narrative.
I’m not trying to hand viewers a neat answer. I’m really trying to build a body of work that feels alive, layered, and still becoming—just like I am. “
