After more than 30 years of dedicated service, Tom Hunter has retired from the Onondaga Historical Association.

Since joining OHA in 1989, Tom served as Curator of Collections, playing a vital role in preserving, cataloging, and sharing the material history of Onondaga County. Through his thoughtful stewardship, thousands of artifacts have been preserved and made accessible to researchers, students, and the public.

Tom also helped bring local history to life through exhibitions and provided steady leadership during important periods of transition, serving as OHA’s interim director on three occasions.

For more than three decades, Tom has been a valued colleague, trusted resource, and dedicated steward of our community’s history. His knowledge, generosity, and commitment to OHA have had a lasting impact on the organization and everyone who has had the pleasure of working with him.

We are deeply grateful for all he has contributed over the years and wish him nothing but the best in this next chapter.

Thank you, Tom, and congratulations on a well-earned retirement!

On May 23, 1885, tragedy struck Onondaga Lake when the steamer "John Greenway" suffered a catastrophic boiler explosion during its first trip of the season. Towing a barge carrying about 20 residents of Geddes, the vessel was roughly a mile east of the outlet when the boiler suddenly burst just before 5:00 pm.

The captain and engineer were severely burned and later died from their injuries, while terrified passengers aboard the barge were rescued by nearby boaters. An investigation later revealed the boiler had been known to be unsafe and should not have been used before repairs were made.

For twelve years, the "John Greenway" had carried passengers to the popular resorts along the north shore of Onondaga Lake.

On May 22, 1915, a landmark trial came to an end in Syracuse. After five weeks in court, a jury unanimously ruled in favor of former President Theodore Roosevelt in the libel suit brought against him by political leader William Barnes.

Barnes had sued Roosevelt for $50,000 after Roosevelt publicly called him “a political boss of the most obnoxious type.” Roosevelt’s defense was simple: he intended to prove the statement was true.

Originally filed in Albany, the trial was moved to Syracuse as a more neutral location. During testimony, Roosevelt’s famously outspoken personality was on full display, as he often spoke freely from the witness stand despite repeated objections and interruptions from the court.
