Saint Marianne Cope Museum & Gift Shop

Saint Marianne Cope Museum & Gift Shop Experience the historical & inspiring journey through the life of a Central New York woman--an innovator of healthcare & patient’s rights. Francis of Syracuse.

The museum is dedicated to the life and legacy of Saint Marianne Cope. Saint Marianne is honored as a leader in the field of health care, education and of her own congregation. Christened Maria Anna Barbara Koob (1838–1918), she was a member of the Sisters of St. She was instrumental in founding St. Joseph’s Hospital—the first hospital in New York to offer care regardless of race, nationality, cre

ed or ability to pay. Later Saint Marianne responded to a call to care for the sick in Hawaii. She devoted 35 years to caring for those afflicted with Hansen’s disease (leprosy) on Kalaupapa, Molokai. Saint Marianne was canonized Oct. 21, 2012. She is the first Franciscan woman from North American to be canonized, and only the 11th American saint. She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2005. Through displays showcasing her stories and artifacts, audio-visual exhibits, and educational outreach, we are able to share her message of respect and compassion. A first class relic of Saint Marianne lies within a reliquary made specially in her honor and rests in our second gallery, offering visitors an opportunity for peaceful contemplation. This gallery serves as a gathering space for presentations, workshops and special Masses. Happy Easter from all of us at the Saint Marianne Cope Museum!

Inspired by the gentle courage, humility, and tireless compassion of St. Marianne, we are reminded that even in the darkest hours, God’s mercy is never absent. Like her, may we be instruments of peace, especially those who suffer, feel forgotten, or carry unseen burdens.

Holy Week calls us to stillness, to reflection, and to trust. Easter bursts forth with hope, renewal, and the promise that love is stronger than death. We thank you for walking this journey with us and wishing you all days filled with light, peace and love.

Last week, it was a pleasure to welcome & meet Mr. Ed Kirk one of the conference organizers of IGNITE 2026 Catholic Men's Conference to St. Marianne's Shrine & Museum, where he thoughtfully selected and purchased gifts of St. Marianne for the two guest speakers.

The gifts were blessed with a relic of the St. Marianne and Ed graciously accepted and expressed his intention to share blessed novenas and prayer cards with the more than 450 men in attendance that was given to him as well.

Today we celebrate National Women Physicians Day and honor the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell. She was the first woman in the United States to earn a medical degree, graduating from Geneva Medical College at 28 years old.

Coincidentally, this historical achievement occurred on January 23, 1849, the day our Saint Marianne Cope would have been turning eleven. Twenty-five years later she would help persuade Geneva Medical College to move its operations to Syracuse University so that their medical students could practice at the newly founded teaching hospital, St. Joseph's.

Born on February 3, 1821, Elizabeth Blackwell’s courage and perseverance opened doors for generations of women in medicine. Today, we celebrate her legacy and all women physicians who continue to heal with skill, compassion and strength.

Today we joyfully celebrate the Feast Day and 188th birthday of Saint Marianne Cope.

Her life was a testament to radical compassion, service, and love. In her honor, we give tulips and invite everyone to brighten their own day or the day of someone else. May her legacy continue to shape our community and remember that even after nearly 200 years, her light still shines.

St. Marianne has deep roots in our Diocese — growing up in Utica, entering religious life with the Sisters of St. Francis in Syracuse, and later serving as a founding leader of St. Joseph's Hospital.

All are welcome to join us. If you're unable to attend in person, the Mass will be livestreamed on the diocese’s YouTube channel, provided by CatholicTV, a ministry supported by the Annual HOPE Appeal.

On the eve of Saint Marianne Cope’s Feast Day, we pause to reflect on her extraordinary life and enduring legacy. Tomorrow, we celebrate her 188th birthday, and the compassion that continues to inspire generations.

How often do you take time to reflect on past or future events?
Can you take a small step to address your needs or align more closely with your values today?
Is there anything I am avoiding in life, and what might happen if I faced it directly?

As symbols of hope and renewal, tulips are shared around St. Joseph’s and the Syracuse community in honor of Saint Marianne’s Feast Day. A single flower can remind someone there is beauty in the world and they are a part of that. We hope to show everyone that small gestures carry great meaning, and that they are seen, valued and cared for.

How does your faith or belief system inform your sense of hope and purpose?
What have you learned about hope from your past experiences?
How do we take action when we or others are hopeless?

Wherever she went, Saint Marianne built communities rooted in dignity, love and belonging. Today, we want to take a moment to honor the caregivers, staff, patients, visitors, and neighbors who make our community stronger every day.

How do you define "belonging"?
Is belonging something you earn, or is it a right?
What is one thing you can do differently to foster belonging in your community this week?
