🍂 As fall settles into Tahoe, we’re reminded that winter here has always required a little preparation—and a lot of resilience.
In this archival video, Judge Chappell shares what it was like living in Tahoe in the 1930s. His journey from Oakland was no easy trip: 17 flat tires in a single journey! 🚗💨

He also recalls preparing for winter, including stocking up on food. In those days, $350 worth of groceries could carry a family through the entire winter.

And here’s another fascinating piece of Tahoe history: local children went to school in the summer! With no snowplows to open the roads, winter roads remained inaccessible until the spring thaw.

🌊 The S.S. Tahoe: Then & Now ⚓️
August 29, 1940 — the S.S. Tahoe was sunk in Lake Tahoe, beginning her life as one of the lake’s most fascinating underwater time capsules.

This video, filmed more than 20 years ago, gives us a glimpse of the Tahoe resting deep beneath the surface. But what does she look like today, more than 80 years later?

Come to the Gatekeeper’s Museum to find out! Our Under Lake Tahoe exhibit features recent underwater footage of the Tahoe filmed by Mission Robotics—giving us a remarkable look at the vessel as she appears today, nearly 400 feet beneath the lake’s surface.
