Today we highlight Dr. Walter L. Smith. Former President Smith was the 7th president of Florida A&M University. Notable achievements during the Smith’s eight-year tenure at FAMU include: the expansion of the Black Archives; the addition of undergraduate and graduate studies; several new and improved facilities, a boost in sports, the expansion of Bragg Memorial Stadium, and reaccreditation of the several professional education programs.

Mary McLeod Bethune was born on a farm near Mayesville, South Carolina, in 1875, the fifteenth child of former slaves. She rose from those humble beginnings to become a world-renowned educator, civil rights and human rights leader, champion for women and young people, and advisor to five U.S. presidents. The Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Statuary Project is a proud moment for the entire state of Florida and our nation. The monument is the first statue erected on public land in Washington, D.C. to honor an African American and a woman.

"I, too, am America.” Poet and Harlem Renaissance icon Langston Hughes was born in 1902 and lived in a house on East 127th Street for 20 years. He published more than 40 books during a career that had a profound impact on American culture. His innovative use of language, influenced by blues and jazz as well as European literary traditions, continues to resonate.

The Meek-Eaton Black Archives, Research Center, and Museum (MEBA) is launching its inaugural History of FAMU Virtual Lecture Series. Each month MEBA is planning to host a lecture or panel discussion covering an important topic in FAMU's storied past. Our first lecture will feature Interim Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research and Associate Professor of History, Reginald K. Ellis, Ph.D.

Dr. Ellis has researched and written extensively on the activism and leadership of black college presidents during the Jim Crow Era. His first book, Between Washington and Du Bois: The Racial Politics of James Edward Shepherd, discusses the life and legacy of North Carolina Central University's founding president, Dr. James E. Shepherd. The Meek-Eaton Black Archives hopes to engage in these conversations with the entire FAMU community and looks forward to reconnecting with our alum and retirees. Please join us on September 23 at 6 p.m. for this event.
