CHANCE โ€ข Marsha Skinner

Opening Reception:
3 - 5 PM | Saturday, May 23

Exhibition Dates:
May 23 - June 20, 2026

203 FINE ART is honored to announce a solo exhibition of paintings by the notable and beloved Taos artist, Marsha Skinner (1944-2025). Embued with the natural world, Marsha Skinnerโ€™s adaptability in traversing a spectrum from deep reds to garden greens reflects the discipline she carried in her ability to let go. Using oil, paper and canvas, the artist creates meditative works from the I Ching technique that are absent of intention and instead created by chance.

Join us this Saturday for the opening reception from 3-5pm

203 FINE ART is honored to announce a solo exhibition of paintings by the notable and beloved Taos artist, Marsha Skinner (1944-2025). Embued with the natural world, Marsha Skinnerโ€™s adaptability in traversing a spectrum from deep reds to garden greens reflects the discipline she carried in her ability to let go. Using oil, paper and canvas, the artist creates meditative works from the I Ching technique that are absent of intention and instead created by chance.

The gentleness, freedom and focus of the I Ching required a sacrifice of control when it came to the way Skinner painted and the way in which she lived her life. Giving up intention and instead finding fluidity, it was this life path of the I Ching that eventually led the artist to a deepening connection with the extraordinary writer, composer and visual artist, John Cage (1912-1992). Skinner collaborated with Cage and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company on the four major works of Beach Birds, Change of Address, Enter and Ocean, thus solidifying her place in art history.

In the fall of 2025, Marsha Skinner left this earth and her longtime home in Questa, New Mexico, but not without a final surprise reflecting the mystery that had always surrounded this captivatingly kind-hearted artist. Before her death, she ensured all the paintings that remained in her possession were destroyed. Having a smaller, more thoughtful body of work to begin with means Skinnerโ€™s paintings are now rare to find and easy to treasure. We are pleased to have four newly acquired paintings that have remained in a private collection since 2005, which are now available to the public and are the highlight of this show.

While still in his native Japan, Michio Takayama was a banker who painted after work and on weekends. He ultimately quit his job to dedicate himself fully to making art.

In 1956, Michio and his wife Yaye visited California to attend their daughterโ€™s wedding. On this trip, Yaye was diagnosed with cancer and required immediate medical care. The Takayamas settled in California, acquiring permanent residency status, and Michio opened an art school in Los Angeles.

In 1966, at the recommendation of one of Michioโ€™s students, the Takayamas visited Taos. Michio became enamored with the high-altitude scenery, starting to draw as soon as he arrived.

Yaye and Michio moved to Taos the following year, with a fellowship at the Helene Wurlitzer foundation. Taos became their permanent home.

Michael McCormick, of the former Michael McCormick and Sons Gallery said, โ€œTakayama found in Taos a place that reflected the vastness of his mind and heart and a place where he could express himself with his palette knife and brushes.โ€

Takayama himself said, โ€œI am learning everything from the beautiful โ€˜Natureโ€™ in Taos. โ€ฆ I have been overwhelmed with the beauty and majesty of New Mexico.โ€

Continuing the Legacy of TJ Mabrey (1941-2026)

203 Fine Art is honored to announce our representation of the Estate of TJ Mabrey, an internationally celebrated artist and prominent leader of the Taos sculpture community.

After closing her studio of over thirty years in Pietrasanta, Italy, and following her partnerโ€™s career in the U.S. Foreign Service to Singapore and Egypt in between, TJ and Stephen Mabrey moved to Taos, New Mexico, in 2011. By the time the artist arrived in this quiet art capital of the U.S., she had already experienced a museum exhibition in each country she previously called home. In 2017, Mabrey had her first museum exhibition here in New Mexico, titled โ€œTJ Mabrey: On the Square,โ€ at the Harwood Museum of Art .

Upon beginning life in Northern New Mexico, TJ quickly became a pillar of the arts community, particularly among fellow stone sculptors. The artist had her inaugural studio exhibition in 2014 and continued to host an exhibition nearly every year, including some at her home, which featured and platformed other Taos artists. Without these community exhibitions, many artists in the Taos & Rio Arriba counties would not have had a local opportunity to show their creations. TJ Mabrey was known for quite literally opening the doors to her own home in a welcoming support of others.

In April of 2026, the artist retained autonomy over her own life after a year-long battle against pancreatic cancer. She passed away peacefully in her home, with her close friend and fellow artist Melissa Kennelly by her side. But as an artist imbued with the symbology of the cycles of life, she has ensured her life does not end with her last breath. Instead, TJ has curated & commissioned six stone sculptors to be a part of her posthumous Relic project, in which each artist will receive a portion of her bones to carve an eternal resting place for her. Once complete, the Relic exhibition will be on display at 203 Fine Art.

TJ Mabreyโ€™s legacy stretches far and wide across this earth, and we are honored to ensure this legacy will only continue to grow.

The newly opened Fritz Scholder exhibition at the Museum fรผr Moderne Kunst () is a landmark event. The first Scholder retrospective of this scale outside of North America, this exhibition presents a large number of the artistโ€™s paintings, drawings,ย collages, and lithographs, with many acquired from important museum and gallery collections including 203 Fine Art.

acquired ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜บ and ๐˜๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ from 203 Fine Art in advance of this exhibition. We are thrilled to contribute to this momentous occasion, with Scholder being recognized internationally for his unromanticized representations of Native Americans, and his enduring impact on postmodern American art.

This is an exciting time for Scholder admirers and collectors alike, and we are eager to continue spotlighting this important artist. 203 Fine Art has dealt in Fritz Scholderโ€™s art for over a decade, developing a collection that includes major paintings, lithographs, bronzes and archival material. We will soon be showcasing these works in a virtual showroom, offering an accessible space to explore Scholderโ€™s breadth of artistic productionโ€”vivid, unsettling, and always stimulating.

A new offering by legendary visual artist, Lynda Benglis, is currently on view at 203 Fine Art. Dripping in an action painting technique reflective of the abstract expressionist movement, the resulting effect takes on a more feminine glow indicative of the artistโ€™s direct protest against a male-centered artscape.

This particular piece, โ€œUntitledโ€ c. 1990s, was a gift to the first Director of the Harwood Museum, Robert M. Ellis. It was a thank you for organizing the museum as a stop for her traveling exhibition, โ€œLynda Benglis: Chimeraโ€”Recent Ceramic Sculptureโ€œ which arrived in Taos in 1996. Benglis grew very close to Ellis, as many of her works can now be found in the permanent collection of the .

Represented by Pace Gallery , Benglis has solidified her place as one of the greats. Benglis first began her career in the midst of the Postminimal movement, pushing the traditions of painting and sculpture into new territories. The structure of the new mediums she was employing played an important role in addressing questions about female identity in relation to art, pop culture, and dominant feminism movements at the time.

In the early 70s, Benglis took new media technologies as her material, producing video art at a time when it was still in its early stages as a medium. Her experimental videos feature performative actions and technological mediation to explore themes of physical presence, narcissism, sexuality, and gendered identity.

Today, the artist resides and creates in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

This Friday, April 24th, UNM-Taos is hosting an art walk on their Klauer campus to celebrate the restoration of a gifted Ted Egri sculpture and to highlight their current outdoor art collection. The community is invited to explore the outdoor installations on a curated tour, accompanied by several of the artists.

203 artists Hank Saxe and Cynthia Patterson, who primarily create small-scale ceramics, installed their sculpture ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜นโ€™๐˜ด ๐˜”๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ด in 1997 on what would become the UNM-Taos campus. At the time, with no man-made structures to engage with, ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜นโ€™๐˜ด ๐˜”๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ด was set in relation to the environment, arranged along lines of sight toward the mountain peaks.

Hank and Cynthia will present their work on the art walk and will then participate in a panel discussion, alongside artists Sean Rising Sun Flanagan (Sun Bird) and Tom Waldron (Agave), facilitated by artist and educator Jaime Knight.

The event commences at 3pm with a dedication by the chancellor, followed by the art walk at 3:30, panel discussion at 4:45 and subsequent Q&A. Refreshments will be served.
