Explore classic techniques while growing your own style.

In Drawing with the Masters, you’ll study works by renowned artists and learn how to draw or improve your drawing following the classical methodology of drawing from life. This is the methodology that was taught for generations and formed most of the great artists. Line, form, tonal work and shading, timed (“gesture”)drawing, perspective, contrast, and proportion are among the elements of drawing that will be discussed, demonstrated and practiced.

We will begin with simple objects and progress to more complex ones. There will be on going individual review of each student’s progress. The goal of this process is “learning how to see” the essence of your subject matter and render it convincingly and confidently. Skills learned may be applied to any subject the artist may wish to develop proficiency in drawing.

Instructor Dolores Flessner is a TAG member who has taught art to regional students for over 25 years. She has exhibited her work locally and nationally and has also illustrated for a variety of publications. Her website is: www.spiritfirefineart.weebly.com

This hands-on session is open to all skill levels and supports Tappahannock Artists Guild’s mission to make art accessible in our community. Bring your curiosity, and we’ll provide the materials and encouragement you need to experiment ,learn, and connect with fellow art lovers.

6 sessions. Thursday mornings 10am -noon. September 10 - October 15.

Sharpen your eye and your line. In this hands-on Drawing in Perspective workshop, you’ll practice simple techniques to create depth, space, and structure in your sketches.

Instructor Robert Placky will lead this three-session series on perspective in drawing. Each class will begin at TAG for a 20-30 minute introduction, and then the class will walk to a nearby site to draw and put new skills to work in situ around historic downtown Tappahannock.

The Art of Seeing – Buildings / Outdoor Drawing Series

This 3-part outdoor drawing experience teaches students how to slow down, observe deeply, and draw what they truly see—not what they think they see. Using local architecture and everyday surroundings, students will develop core skills in perception, proportion, and mark-making while drawing from the natural world.

Class 1: Learning to See (Observation & Awareness)

Focus: Composition of the structure, slowing down and breaking visual assumptions. Drawing the spaces around the building (e.g., between rooflines, wall outlines, branches) accurately see the negative shapes. Review of the class drawings and discussion on areas of focus.

Class 2: Seeing Structure (Proportion & Relationships)

Focus: Measuring and simplifying what you see; the use of the “Sighting technique” to measure height, width and ratios. Compare angles and alignments of the building -vs- natural objects (trees, landscaping, etc.). Review of the class drawings and discussion on areas of focus.

Class 3: Seeing Light & Expression (Value & Interpretation)

Focus: Light, shadow, and personal mark-making; introduce the use of light & shadow mapping to establish a range of values. Seeing leads to understanding—but expression makes it yours…mark making and cross-hatching to achieve a personal interpretation of the structure. Review of the class drawings and discussion on areas of focus.

All are welcome as we learn, draw, and build our local arts community together.
