🪓 Watching Lizzie Borden on Netflix? We have some local history for you.

You know Fall River. But do you know about the 283 nights Lizzie Borden spent in Taunton?

After her arrest in August 1892, Lizzie was brought by train to Taunton, where hundreds of curious onlookers reportedly crowded the streets as she was taken to the Bristol County Jail on Hodges Avenue.

And that was just the beginning.

There was the jailhouse cat named Daisy. Food ordered from the Taunton Inn. Reporters desperate for a glimpse inside. Questions about whether a woman of Lizzie’s social standing was receiving special treatment. And nearly ten months spent awaiting the trial that would captivate the country.

🇺🇸 THIS DAY IN HISTORY | October 21, 1774

We’re still HUZZA(H)ING after a fantastic Liberty & Union celebration this past weekend, and today is the anniversary of the very event that started it all!

On October 21, 1774, Taunton colonists raised a British Ensign bearing the words “Liberty and Union” on Taunton Green, making a bold statement of defiance against British policies.

It’s why we gather each year for the Old Colony History Museum’s Liberty and Union Day, celebrating Taunton’s place in the story of American independence. And this year, as we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, it’s exciting to see just how far that story has traveled!

A colleague visiting Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona spotted Taunton’s Liberty & Union flag hanging in the visitor center as they celebrate America’s 250th. From Taunton Green to the Painted Desert, our local history is part of the American story. 🇺🇸

Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate with us this weekend. We’re proud to keep this history alive, right here at home and far beyond it!
