350 Years Later: August 28, 1676

On this day 350 years ago, Anawan, the senior military leader serving under Metacom (King Philip), surrendered at Rehoboth. His capture marked the effective end of large-scale fighting in King Philip’s War, although conflict continued in parts of northern New England until the war formally concluded in 1678.

The war left a profound impact on all who experienced it. More than 600 colonists were killed, 12 colonial towns were destroyed, and more than 3,000 Native people lost their lives. Many surviving indigenous men, women, and children were sold into slavery in the Caribbean.

Three and a half centuries later, the war remains one of the most devastating conflicts in New England history, forever reshaping the region and its people. As we continue to reflect on this anniversary, we invite you to read our recent blog post, *Reimagining Metacom*, which explores how the war is remembered today and the importance of incorporating Indigenous perspectives into our understanding of this history.

Thank you again to everyone who joined us for our recent King Philip’s War: 350 Years Later program. We are grateful for the thoughtful discussion and strong turnout. A recording of the presentation will soon be available on our website, and we look forward to sharing it with those who were unable to attend.
