The works from Lezley Saar’s Gender Renaissance series feature androgynous figures in Victorian backdrops as a surrealist response to her own personal experience with biracial and transgender identities. While much of the work in our exhibition Then & Now focuses on social justice topics related to race and ethnicity, Saar’s work expands the conversation to include gender and its intersection with race.

58 years ago today, Martin Luther King, Jr. shared his dream with the world. Photographer Dan Budnik was there on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to capture some of the most iconic moments of the Civil Rights Movement. We are honored to have these images on display here at the Telluride Gallery.

For painter and printmaker Emmi Whitehorse, “the act of making art must stay true to a harmonious balance of beauty, nature, humanity, and the whole universe. This is in accordance with Navajo philosophy. My paintings tell the story of knowing land over time. They are purposefully meditative and meant to be seen slowly.”
Emmi’s work is on view in the gallery as part of “Altered States” until August 8.

“Sculptures are made by adding or subtracting from raw material mass. In making one sculpture, the scooped out remains, byproduct, detritus, become the castaway material to form another sculpture whose entity is created by the other’s negative.” -Angel Chen
This symbiotic relationship between the positive and negative is so evident in Angel Chen’s ceramics. A selection of works from her “Ocean Floor” series is on view at the gallery now.

“White Elephant Ears,” 2021
Ceramic, 12 x 7 x 7 in.

Did you know that Bennett Bean’s vessels are pit fired? He then uniquely decorates each one by hand painting the exterior and lining the interior with gold leaf. About this process, he says, “It began in 1980, and I’m still not finished finding out what’s possible.”
