CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing. The search for more twins continues to this day.

CANDLES is an acronym for Children of Auschwitz N**i Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors. The CANDLES organization was founded in 1984 by Eva Mozes Kor with help from her twin sister, Miriam Mozes Zieger, to launch an effort to locate other surviving Mengele twins. As a result of their efforts, Eva and Miriam were able to locate 122 individual Mengele twins living in ten countries and four continents

. In 1995, Eva opened the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Terre Haute. In 2003, the museum was firebombed by an arsonist and burned to the ground. With support from the community and organizations, a new museum building opened in 2005 and remains an important part of the community today. The museum draws increasing numbers of visitors every year, many coming from long distances.

Kizito’s testimony of surviving the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda was both heartbreaking and inspiring. His message of resilience, forgiveness, and human dignity reminded all of us why education and remembrance matter.

CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center is excited to announce that after receiving a generous grant from Arts Midwest, we will be hosting a series of programming focusing on LGBTQ+ oppression during the Holocaust. This often overlooked history led to the imprisonment of between 5,000 and 15,000 mainly gay men with a roughly 60% death rate. This unjust persecution was led by the N**is under "Paragraph 175," which banned homosexuality in Germany and occupied zones.

Between June 26th and 28th, we will be hosting 3 performances of the newly released play "A Pink Triangle" written by Kirby Taylor at The District Theatre in Indianapolis. This compelling two-person performance explores the forgotten history of LGBTQ+ persecution in N**i Germany. The drama focuses on an estranged father and his gay son trying to reconcile in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. The play aims to foster conversations about resilience, humanity, and the fight for identity during this dark historical period.

The writer Kirby Taylor will be speaking following each performance, and an exhibition will be held in the lobby that explores the themes of LGBTQ+ victims of the Holocaust. Recommended for ages 13 and older, we invite you to join us for this impactful performance and purchase your tickets now before they sell out!

Join us on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 1 PM (EST) as CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center welcomes Rwandan genocide survivor Kizito D. Kalima for a powerful and inspiring presentation.

Born in Rwanda in 1979, Kizito Kalima survived the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, enduring hiding and multiple violent attacks before finding refuge in the swamps. Displaced but resilient, his basketball talent led him to the U.S. in 1998 - offering safety, purpose, and a new beginning.

In 2010, Kizito met Eva Mozes Kor at CANDLES. She pushed him to share his story of survival. Moved by her profound work on forgiveness, Kizito found the inspiration he needed to start his own difficult journey toward healing and reconciliation. Today, he is the Founder and Executive Director of the Peace Center for Forgiveness and Reconciliation, located in Indianapolis.

In addition to speaking in person, CANDLES will also feature Kizito D. Kalima’s Dimensions in Testimony experience in the museum’s interactive theater.

Seating is limited for this free event. Please RSVP if you plan to attend: https://forms.gle/oP3fn4VEzXtVDUgy8

Grand opening of “Inside the Lab: Medical Experiments at Auschwitz.” Join us this Saturday for the grand opening of a powerful new exhibit exploring the medical atrocities committed at Auschwitz. The installation provides a historically grounded representation of a N**i medical laboratory, alongside reflections from Holocaust survivor Eva Mozes Kor and educational content on twin experimentation and eugenics.

The permanent exhibit features curated quotes from Eva Kor, offering both historical insight and a deeply human perspective, while interpretive panels examine the pseudoscientific rationale behind N**i experimentation.

“This exhibit represents an important step in deepening our educational mission,” said Troy Fears, Executive Director of CANDLES. “By helping visitors visualize the environment where these atrocities occurred, we aim to foster a clearer understanding of the dangers of unchecked hatred, dehumanization, and unethical science.”

The exhibit also highlights the broader context of N**i racial ideology and the misuse of medical authority, encouraging visitors to reflect on ethical responsibility in both historical and contemporary settings.

Amy Grove, the CANDLES staff member who led the exhibit's design, will be present on April 25th to engage with guests and answer questions.
