Today’s the day to make your voice heard. Hoy es el día para hacer que tu voz se escuche.
Our communities are built by those who show up — in art, in culture, and at the ballot box.
Nuestras comunidades se construyen con quienes se presentan — en el arte, en la cultura y en las urnas.
Be part of the story. Sé parte de la historia.

Today we remember: Independence Day began as a protest.

A rejection of kings. Of colonial rule. Of being told who we are, what we can do, and who we belong to.

But freedom can’t stop at flags and fireworks. It must extend to every body, every voice, every community fighting for dignity and autonomy—especially now.

At En Foco, we uplift artists whose work is rooted in defiance. Who use the camera as a weapon, a witness, and a world-builder. Because true independence means refusing silence. Refusing invisibility. Refusing to bow.

No kings. No cages. No compromise.

Meet “The Bronx Issue” featured artist Fernando Zelaya!

Fernando Zelaya is a Bronx, NY-based photographer, and bookmaker. He is also the co-founder of the collaborative zine publishing project the ‘cademy. Fernando’s work deals with ideas of nostalgia, memory, forgetting, and loss, themes that then tie together the work in the book format.

We have submitted a formal appeal to the National Endowment for the Arts regarding the recent withdrawal of funding for our 2025 En Foco Fellowship Program. We believe this decision stands in contradiction to the NEA’s updated priorities, which emphasize support for Hispanic-serving institutions and projects that uplift the nation’s diverse artistic heritage.
This Fellowship is more than a grant. It is a space where cultural preservation, creative expression, and professional advancement converge. We urge the NEA to reconsider this decision, and we remain committed to providing opportunities that reflect the richness of our communities.
.
Thank you for standing with us as we advocate for equity, representation, and justice in the arts.

On May 5, 2025, En Foco (along with countless other arts non-profits) received the news of the loss of another critical source of funding, the National Endowment for the Arts.
We do not intend to take this loss laying down and are in immediate talks for appealing the decision. As of now, it’s still business as usual for En Foco as we continue to support our artist community.
Support matters now more than ever.
Donate, subscribe to Nueva Luz, and spread the word. Write to your elected officials and demand the return of arts funding.
Our stories deserve to be seen, heard, and preserved. Together, we protect our legacies.
