The Farmers National Bank of Valentine has gone into voluntary liquidation and will cease business.
Depositors will be paid in full.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Campau of Thedford, a boy, Saturday, June20. This was a very welcome
boy as they have three girls.
Miss Eva Noel, bookkeeper for the Citizens State Bank, left on 43 this morning for Hot Springs. SD,
where she will be for two weeks playing in the Wilson
Saxophone Orchestra in the Evans Hotel.

Eldon Knepper recently purchased the Mobil Gas Station known as the Red Top Service from Leland
Johnston, including the buildings and lots.
Cyrus Wolfenden, rancher north of Mullen, died at Grand Island where he and others had gone for
business. They were staying at the Yancy Hotel where he became ill. The funeral will be held at
Valentine Saturday, July 1 at 2 o’clock.

Steve Boyer of Seneca and John Long left Thursday to return to the Great Lakes Naval Training Center
in Illinois where they will receive 16 weeks of schooling.
Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Smith of Seneca were honored on their 60 th wedding anniversary Sunday June 1 at
the school all-purpose room.
Eleanor Horst of Halsey, manager of the State 4-H Camp, was part of the dedication on June 10 of one
of the new cabins built with the financial assistance of the Abbott Foundation.

Kyle Haake took first place in the State High School Rodeo in Steer Wrestling and won a saddle for his
efforts.
Clay and Joni Horst of Loveland, CO are the parents of a baby boy, Nathan Chandler Horst who arrived
Friday, May 19, 2000. Grandparents are Richard Giles of Thedford, Marvin and Linda Cox of Mullen,
Marilyn Horst and Denny Horst. Great-grandparents are Gene and Eleanor Horst, Mildred Cowdin and
Dorothy Hughes.
Myra Hardy attended the Cottonwood High School Reunion in the Dunning Park on Sunday, June 25.
The Cottonwood High School was a country high school located about 25 miles north of Dunning.

There will be a Bridal Shower for Melissa Matulka June 27, 2015, 2-4 at the Catholic Parish Hall in
Thedford.
The 50 year celebration at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Mullen was well attended on
Saturday afternoon and many of the visitors spent time visiting with the residents.

Miss Luetta Mowery will teach in Sheridan County at the beginning of the new school term. This is Miss
Mowery’s first year to teach.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. George Pearson at Wood Lake, Monday, June 15 th , a seven pound boy.
Mrs. Earl Losh was a heavy loser in poultry during the severe storm last week. Others report losing
poultry also.

Purdum News – Clarice Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Smith, and John White were married
at the Purdum Congregational Church June 18.

According to a recent news story, Christian K. Nelson, a one-time school principal at Thedford, was the
inventor of the Eskimo Pie.
Veteran trap shooter, Stan Danekas from north of Thedford, was inducted into the Nebraska
Sportsman Hall of Fame at their association meeting earlier this month. He has won many trophies in
many states and was an Olympic Shooter in Moscow, Russia in 1958.
The Thedford High School classes of 1957-1963 will have a picnic at the Halsey Park Sunday, June 22 at
noon. Bring families and picnic lunch. Bill Elliott and Bernard Stichka, organizers.

Thedford High School students qualifying for the State Rodeo Finals to be held in Broken Bow June 23-
25 are Clint Allen, Tyler Daly, Travis Warren, Kati Pearman, Jesse Huddle, Clint Burney, Kyle Haake, Ryan
Gift, Ginger Gift, Tyrell Blauvelt and Ford Miller.
Students helping move the museum contents from the Court House to the former home of Chet and
Ida Paxton on Wednesday were Tyler Daly, Ginger Gift, Julie Hamilton, Colin Daly, Riley Daly, D.J.
Haumann, Kally Neben, Michael Haumann and their teachers, Rosalea Gift, and Melanie Daly. Louise
Miller donated show cases that were used in Miller’s Grocery.

The children of Ken and Una Clausen will host a 50 th Anniversary Reception for their parents Saturday,
June 20, 2-4, at the UCC Fellowship Hall in Thedford.
Shaylee Scranton from Thedford High School participated in the Annual Masonic All-Star Marching
Band Camp June 2-6. Performances were at Harmon Park on Friday evening, the Shrine Bowl Parade and
the Shrine Bowl football game on Saturday.
The Frank and Kayla Kramer family who live southeast of Stapleton had a mountain lion in their yard
Tuesday, June 2. They took a picture of it from the back window of their home and contacted the
Nebraska Game & Parks Commission in Lincoln.

100 years ago
Another train load of southern cattle arrived and will be summered in the Jim McMillan pastures along
the Dismal River. Tom and Joe McMillan were on hand to help trail them to the summer range and are
to have charge of the herd this summer.
Seneca News - Mr. Phillip McGinnis and Miss Myrtle Foster were married on June 3 rd . Mr. McGinnis of
the McGinnis Grocery Store has lived in or near Seneca nearly all his life. Miss Foster is teaching in
Seneca and plans to teach again this fall. Mr. Whitehead was recently married and he and his wife were
serenaded by the Seneca band Monday evening. They will be living in the Frank Alton house.
Rain, wind and hail caused lots of damage north of Thedford in into the Brownlee area Friday evening.
The C.H. Rogers homestead, the old Wyckoff place,Tolles and Pollards all suffered damage to buildings,
windmills and rye crops. At the F.W. Tate ranch damage was done to the house, chicken house and
windmill.

A replica of the Liberty Bell will arrive in Thedford by truck Monday, June 26, 1950. It will tour the state
as the symbol of the Independence Savings Bonds Drive. A group of Thomas County truckers will be on
hand to greet the fellow driver.
The R. Swisher Store is adding a new cream service. They will buy cream on Mondays and Thursdays
which will have the cream into the plant the following days.

Thedford residents will be voting on a $100,000 bond issue July 1 for improvement of the water system
in the Village of Thedford.
Neal Lumber Co, Inc. has formed a corporation under the Nebraska Business Corporation Act. Kenneth
L. Neal and Timothy R. Neal , the incorporators.
Charles Daly was all-around cowboy at the Stapleton High School Rodeo.
Stan Danekas donated the flagpole and flag at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Gary G. Peterson of Thedford has joined the Broken Bow law firm of Stumpff, Guggenmos & England.
Gary had been a teacher and coach in Thedford before attending law school and hopes to stay in
Thedford if economically feasible.
Naomi J. Summers, 59, died Thursday, June 8, 2000 at the hospital in North Platte. She was born at
Thedford to Norman and Georgia (Voth) Vian Sr. and graduated from Thedford High School. Funeral
services were June 13 at the United Church of Christ in Thedford and interment was in Hillcrest
Cemetery. Survivors include her husband Earl Summers; daughter Linda Anderson; sons LeRoy, Jim,
Chris and William Summers; 12 grandchildren; sisters Wanda Fisher, Pamela Vian and Verna Deal;
brothers Norman Vian Jr., Jeffery Vian and Millard Vian.

The Nebraska State Historical Society recently approved a roadside historical marker for DeWitty, a
successful African-American settlement west of Brownlee. Descendants of DeWitty, the Cherry County
Historical Society and author Stew Magnuson are sponsoring the project. The group is raising money to
fund the marker.
The Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Mullen will celebrate 50 years of operation June 13 th at the
Nursing Home. The Nursing Home followed the opening of the Pioneer Memorial Hospital which
operated from 1957-1987.

Sandhills-Thedford tracksters winning medals at the State Track and Field Championships in Omaha
were Justin Lee, 4 th place in Long Jump and the 4x100 Meter Relay team of Caden Jameson, Colby
Collier, Riggin Anderson and Justin Lee also winning a 4 th place medal.

T.P. Hamiltons have their new two-story 11 room house ready for plaster. This will make the best farm
residence in that vicinity when completed.
Several groups from Thedford report good fishing at the north lakes and others getting catfish in the
Middle Loup River.
The Thedford band will play the first of the series of concerts in the stand in the court yard park. This
will continue for 3 months of music on Saturday evenings.

Mr. and Mrs. Butler from Broken Bow have purchased the locker system from Mr. and Mrs. David
Beckhoff. We understand the Beckhoffs will return to the ranch.
Ada Angeline Nutter, 87, of Fairbury passed away at the home of her granddaughter Mrs. Bus Fielder.
Surviving are four sons; Pearl of Thedford, Olen of Halsey, Emmett of Arizona and Herb of Topeka,
Kansas; two daughters, 30 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.

The Thedford cheerleaders attended a 5 day camp at Wesleyan University at Lincoln. Those going were
Vicki Johnson, Julie Barnes, Denise Figard, Janet Davies, Mary Imig and Karla Blauvelt.
Todd Michael Boyer, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Boyer, died at an Omaha hospital May 26 three
days after he was born. A prayer service was held May 28 at the Assembly of God Church in Mullen and
interment was in the Seneca Cemetery.
Miss Janice Colleen Haumann and Michael Lynn Hodges were married Saturday May 17 at the United
Church of Christ in Thedford. A reception was held in the church fellowship room following the
ceremony. Parents are Mr. and Mrs. David Haumann and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hodges all of Thedford.

The swimming pool at the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey officially opened Tuesday, June 6,
2000. Open six days a week and closed on Thursdays.
The Thedford Kindergarten class held a graduation ceremony, Wednesday, May 17. Class members are
Jessie Andersen, Eugene Bailey, Colby Bowers, Ronnie Busch, Tanner Collins, Jayna Egle, Brittany
Johnson, Cheyenne Miller, Danya Mintle, Megan Peterson, Charlene Scranton, Bodell Sherman and Tyrel
Treat; teacher Mrs. Kirkpatrick.
The four-man team of Nathan Plugge, Cody Hartman, Brad Hisel and Pastor Tim Pearson competed in
the Custer County DARE Golf Tournament at Broken Bow Saturday May 22 and took first place in the
third flight. The tournament raises funds for the Custer County DARE Program.

New owners of the Thedford Hodges Cenex, Jeremy Smith and Ryan Cone, will host a customer
appreciation at the station Friday, June 12, LaDonna Haake is the new manager.
The family of Stan and Julie Pettit request a Card Shower for their 50 th Anniversary on June 6.
Colby Hamilton will coach the area team at the Mid-Plains Area All Star basketball games June 5 at
North Platte. Alex Coffman and Justin Lee from Sandhills-Thedford will be on the team. Mullen’s Bec Ray
will coach the area girls’ team. Jessica Lovitt of Mullen will be on that team. Kelsey Higgins from
Sandhills-Thedford will be on the team coached by Nathan Stienke of North Platte St. Pats.

Brownlee -News - The little one year old son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Clausen of Gard died Saturday April
18th of whooping cough. Rev. H Bert Kofske preached the funeral sermon and the little one was buried
in the Brownlee cemetery.
Cascade News – The hog house belonging to John Keller caught fire and burned to the ground last
Wednesday.
Purdum News – Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Beller are rejoicing over the arrival of a baby girl born last
Tuesday. She joins three sisters at Home.
75 years ago
Thedford will have a new high school after the recent bond election vote count was 250 votes in favor
and 84 votes against. This was the 4 th bond election and the cost had been reduced to $105,000.
Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Mercure are the parents of a baby girl, born Friday, April 21, 1950 at the Alliance
hospital.
The State Railway Commission Monday gave permission to the Consolidated Telephone Company of
Dunning and the Thomas Co. Telephone Company to merge. Both companies are owned by Clyde Cox
and Clifford Thompson. The new company will be known as the Consolidated Telephone Company.

Thedford girls took top honors at the Arnold track meet Friday, April 11. Thedford scorers were Deb
Scranton, Janny Robinson, Julie Harrell, Diana David, Karla Blauvelt, Mary Imig, Jeanie Robinson, Janet
David, Bev Walsh, Denise Figard and Vicki Johnson.
Area ladies modeling historical garments at the recent Ladies Day were Mamie Opheim and Lorraine
Larsen of Thedford, Carol Chase of Elsmere and Kyle Cox of Purdum.

Jake Purdum is featured in this week’s Senior Spotlight. Jake was active in football and T-Club and plans
to go to Sheridan, Wyoming to college.
The Thomas County Unit of the American Cancer Society raised $2,000 during their Daffodil Days which
took place February 7 through February 18.
Shena Nutter, senior at Thedford High School, is the recipient of the Good Citizen Award, sponsored by
Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She scored 98 out of a possible 100 points on her essay
entitled Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility to Preserve it. Shena had two hours to write the
essay after given the topic at school. Audrey Jones presented Shena with a certificate, medal and pin for
her efforts.

Shirley Simonson Moran Nutter, 90, departed this life on April 16, 2015 at Linden Court in North Platte.
She was married to Don Moran and they had two sons, Larry and Terry Moran. She married Glen Nutter
sometime after Don’s death. Survivors include her two sons and their wives, Larry and Lana Moran and
Terry and Karen Moran, five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, sisters Beth Harding and Harriett
Phipps, brother Carl Simonson and many other relatives. Services were April 20 at the United Church of
Christ in Thedford and interment was in Hillcrest Cemetery.
THS Senior TelRae Sherman was in the Senior Spotlight this week. TelRae’s activities were FCA,
basketball, cross country, FCA, FCCLA, National Honor Society, Speech and the One-Acts.
Wyatt Naber is featured in the SHS Senior Spotlight. Wyatt was active in football, FFA and FBLA. He
plans to join the Military.

“Uncle Pete” Starr, former assessor of Blaine County, celebrated his 107 th birthday, April 8, 1925.
Sheriff Shriner helped Edgar Thompson drive his 180 head of feeder hogs toward his ranch after being
shipped from his farm in York.
Brownlee News – Dr. Roth of Big Creek was in Brownlee Saturday examining applicants for the Old Line
Insurance Company.
75 years ago
Mr. and Mrs. David Haumann are the parents of a son born last week.
Juniors and Seniors of Thedford High School went to Alliance for their banquet Friday, April 7.
County Agent Stafford suffered severe bruises when his car overturned on the highway to Brewster
one day last week.
Several from here attended the funeral of George McDonald at Purdum April 6. It was also a memorial
service for his son, Andrew McDonald, who gave his life at the battle of Luzon, April 3, 1945, and is
buried in the US Military cemetery near Manilla, Philippine Islands.

Janice Robinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Robinson, has been named as Girls State delegate and
Jeanine Lage, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Lage, is alternate.
Miss Johna Kae Seeley of Halsey and Ronald E. Eaton of Brownlee were married February 14 at Halsey
United Church of Christ. They will reside at the Kenneth Phipps ranch near Whitman.

Marisa Schaeffer is featured in this week’s Senior Spotlight. She has been active in volleyball, basketball
track, cheerleading, FCCLA and Student Council.
Lee Rhian, son of Tom and Paula Rhian of Thedford, was recognized as a High Scholar at the Honors
Convocation at UNL.

The THS Senior in the Spotlight this week is Justin Lee. Justin has been active in FCCLA, football,
basketball, track, One-Acts and National Honor Society.
The SHS featured Shane Lewis in the Senior Spotlight. Shane was active in football and plans to attend
NCTA to study animal science.
The Sandhills-Thedford Knights golf team competed in the Bobcat Invite Friday and brought home the
team title with 361 points. Jacey Nutter took the top spot by shooting an 81and Garret Egle was second
with an 82. The results of the other team members were Ben Masten 86, Dillon Micheel 96, Sheven
Rodocker 97, Cord Hesseltine 102, Austin Coffman 105 and Michael Benscoter 113.

Mr. and Mrs. Orien Winter were saddened when their baby boy born April 3, 1925 at the Carothers
hospital at Broken Bow died April 4. A service was held at the home Sunday with burial at the Thedford
cemetery.
At the school land auction last Wednesday F.E. Thompson, B.L. Murphey and Frank Keenan bid on land
along the west border of the Forest Reserve. There were no bidders for the rest of the acres offered.
Cascade News – Miss Lela Hazen of Lewanna and Mr. Clay Davenport of Chester were married April 2
at Broken Bow.
75 years ago
Funeral services for Walter. B. Daniels were held March 23, 1950 in Litchfield. Mr. Daniels was
publisher of the Thomas County Herald- Clipper when Orien B. Winters bought it from him, Jan. 1, 1923.
After receiving a petition with 38 signatures the Thomas County Commissioners passed a resolution to
request State Auditor of Public Accounts, Ray E. Johnson, to cause an audit to be made of the books and
records of the Thomas County High School District and the results made public.

Miss Margaret Wiese, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Larsen and James M. Bryant were married
Saturday April 5 at the United Church of Christ in Thedford. A reception followed at the church and they
are at home at Thedford.
Brad Nutter has been named as Boys State representative from Thedford High School and Jim McIntyre
was named as alternate.

Morgan Maseberg is featured in this week’s Senior Spotlight. Morgan has been active in track and cross
country and in the Nebraska Model Bridge Contest. He plans to go to Mid-Plains CC and major in
Automotive Technology.
There will be a Bridal Shower for Lisa Knott Saturday, April 15 at the Catholic Parish Hall. Lisa is the
fiancé of Dan Neal.
The Thedford High School band and choir participated in the Sandhills music contest March 30 at
Hyannis. They received a 1 rating in choir, band, jazz band and percussion ensemble. Christa Hamilton
and Julie Hamilton received a 1 rating in individual solos and Miles Eatinger a 1 on his timpani solo.

Caden Jameson is in the THS Senior Spotlight this week. Caden has been active in football, basketball,
track, FCA, FCCLA, National Honor Society, FBLA and the One-Acts.
SHS Senior spotlight featured Toby Hunt. Toby’s activities were FFA, Quiz Bowl, range judging and
church youth group.
Several members of the Sandhills-Thedford basketball teams were recognized by several area
organizations as outstanding team members. The Knights listed are Justin Lee, Jacey Nutter and Austin
Coffman. Lady Knights on the list are Madison Taylor, Kelsey Higgins, Rebecca Higgins, Kyra Miles and
Avery Taylor.

A boys troupe from Father Flanagan’s Boys Town will entertain here Saturday, April 4 th . The troupe will
include the band and boys with singing and speaking parts.
A very enjoyable shower was extended to recent bride, Mrs. Orville Voth, last Friday evening at the
home of Mrs. Firm Hanks. Many nice presents were given.
Brownlee News - A fire Monday and Tuesday north of the river and west of Goose Creek burned an
area 1 to 2 miles wide and 12 miles long. The greatest loss was sustained by Edgar Thompson, who had
four head of work horses and two saddle horses with their harness and saddles perish, a hay wagon and
barn and 40 stacks of hay. F. W. Ganser lost 12 stacks of hay and Geo. Higgins four.

May Ola Peterson, 37, daughter of James and Lucy Peterson, was born Febr. 7, 1913 and passed away
at her home in Thedford March 26, 1950. She was united in marriage to Ralph Price in October 1935.
Three children were born to this union; Thomas, James and Mary. In March of 1947 her husband passed
away. In August, 1948, she married Alder Jatko. Survivors include her husband Alder, children Thomas,
James and Mary Price, her parents, 2 sisters and 1 brother.
Mrs. Elaine Ballard has been appointed as census enumerator for Thedford precinct and the town of
Thedford.

A heavy snow on Tuesday was followed by the blizzard on Thursday and Friday. Activities were
canceled and the mail truck did not arrive.
Miss Edythe Margaret Malchow and Stephen J. Eberhart were married March 22 at the United Church
of Christ in Thedford. Mr. and Mrs. Chet Paxton were host and hostess and Jessica Paxton was in charge
of the guestbook.

Samantha Harris and JeNel Purdum are featured in the Senior Spotlight this week. Samantha has been
busy with Volleyball, Cheerleading, T-Club, music, Speech, plays, Spanish Club and FCCLA. She plans to
attend college but has not decided on a major. JeNel participated in Volleyball, Cheerleading, T-Club,
Student Council and FCCLA. She plans to go to college and major in Sales/Marketing.
Michael McLeod and JuliAnna Schaeffer represented the Thedford fifth and sixth grades at the KNOP
TV Spelling Bees in February which were shown on TV. Chelsey Helzer represented Thomas County at
the Nebraska State Spelling Bee held in Omaha March 18

Donna Lou Sevier, 59, departed this life March 24, 2015 in Lincoln. Services were March 30 at the
Seneca Auditorium and burial was in the Seneca Cemetery. Survivors are her husband, Tom Sevier,
daughter Robin Graves, son Tim Sevier, step-daughter Suzie Wahlgren and family, father Don Herbig,
mother Marge Hardy, sister Peg Bek and many other relatives.
Kelsey Higgins was featured in the Thedford Senior Spotlight. Her activities were volleyball, basketball,
track, FCA, FBLA, FCCLA, National Honor Society and Speech.
Anthony Hernandez was in the Sandhills High School Spotlight. He has been in band, choir and FBLA.

Halsey – Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Bates are rejoicing over the arrival of a fine baby girl, Ruth Grove Bates, at
their home Sunday, March 22 nd .
The Steadman house in Seneca, occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Chas. King, was completely destroyed by fire
yesterday. Very little furniture and belongings of the King family were saved.
Dr. Pennington’s birth schedule has for Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Phillips, a girl born Sunday March 22 nd and
for Mr. and Mrs. Estsy May of Seneca a girl, born today, March 26.

Mrs. May Price Jatko, 37, died Sunday, March 26. We expect a complete obituary next week.
An election will be held on Monday, April 24, 1950, at the Thomas County Court House to vote for or
against a $105.000 bond for the purchase of a site for building a schoolhouse to include an auditorium-
gymnasium.

Wayne Eatinger won the bull do***ng event at the Kansas State College Rodeo at Manhattan last
weekend. He is a student at Fort Hays State College.
Starting Sunday April 6 the Cowpoke Inn at Thedford will have a Sunday Buffet for $3.00 for adults and
$1.50 for children.

Kati Pearman was selected as the Thedford High School delegate to Cornhusker Girls State to be held in
Lincoln. Kati is the daughter of Lynn Pearman and Kari Pearman. Melissa Hodges, daughter of Dan and
Alice Hodges, was chosen as alternate.
Wade Neben is featured in the Senior Spotlight this week. His Extracurricular Activities are golf,
working on vehicles and installing stereos. Wade plans to go to auto body school.

Cassidy Hafer and Tyler Guggenmos were in the Senior Spotlight this week from Sandhills High School.
Cassidy was active in FFA, volleyball, basketball, track, FBLA and National Honor Society. Tyler
participated in FFA, FBLA, band, choir and gymnastics.
Norman David Miles Bruce, 38, formerly of Seneca but now of Bowman, ND, passed away March 13,
2015 near Rhame, ND. Survivors of Miles are his wife, Billie, four children, parents Norman Lee and
Donna Bruce, six brothers and sisters and many other family members. Services were March 18 at the
Assembly of God Church in Bowman, ND.
The Nebraska Cattlemen Sandhills Affiliate held their Winter Ball at Epply Lodge at the Nebraska 4-H
Camp near Halsey. 2015 officers are Troy Saner, Frank Utter, Brenda Masek, Tessa Quittner, Dan
Wacker, John Parsons and Craig Miles.

Miss Fay L. Weaver became the bride of Orville F. Voth Saturday afternoon at the home of the bride’s
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Weaver. They are both graduates of Thomas County High School.
John Mallory returned from St. Louis last Friday having sold his shipment of furs for $4,000.
The Triple L Ranch of near Brownlee is shipping 12 cars of fat cattle to Chicago. Claude Curry will go
with the cattle.

Mr. and Mrs. Dale Murphy are the parents of a son, born in the Broken Bow hospital last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Jameson are the parents of a son, born March 11 at the Valentine hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Faubel are the parents of a son, born last Monday at the Broken Bow hospital.

Mrs. Harley VanDuyn, 64, died at her home in Seneca Saturday evening, March 15. Funeral services
were March 17 from the Open Bible Church in Seneca and interment was in the Seneca Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, a son Harry, one sister and two grandchildren.
Peg Wiese was honored with a bridal shower Monday at the Chet Paxton home.

Shena Nutter is featured in the Senior Spotlight this week. She has been active in basketball, volleyball,
FCCLA, T-Club and band. Shena plans to attend college, possibly majoring in Business Administration.
Clarine Licking and Zakary Eickhoff announce their engagement and will exchange wedding vows July
15, 2000 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in North Platte. Their parents are Wayne and Terri Licking
and Rev. Ben and Sharon Eickhoff.
LeOra Cordis, 71, passed away February 27, 2000 at her home in Sequim WA. She was born to Vernon
and Lauriene Loudon in Thedford. Survivors are her mother of Thedford, daughter Nyla Gladwin, brother
Gene Loudon of Thedford, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Kermit Paxton was honored with a party for his 100 th birthday February 15, 2015 at Linden Estates in
North Platte. Kermit and his brothers and sisters went to high school in Thedford. He was married to
Pauline Jones in 1941and they were blessed with five children. Pauline died in 1966 and Kermit married
Lois McFate in 1968. Kermit ranched west of Thedford until moving to Linden States.
Donna Lucy Brewer, 90, formerly of Thedford, died March 10, 2015 in Wahoo. Donna was preceded in
death by her parents, James and Freda Sinkler; husband Earl Brewer and a sister and brother. She is
survived by her children; Dorothy Sorensen, Earline Brewer and Peg Kruger; five grandchildren, four
great-grandchildren and a brother, Duaine Sinkler. Funeral services were March 16 at the Hillcrest
Cemetery Chapel, Thedford, NE.
Gerald “Gil” Springer, 68, of Dunning, died March 10, 2015 in an ATV accident near Dunning. He is
survived by his wife, Alice; daughter Gwen; son Shawn; three grandchildren; a sister; 2 brothers and
many other family members. A celebration of life was March 14 at Sandhills High School, Dunning.
Inurnment will be at Cedarview Cemetery at Mullen, NE.

Beginning Saturday, March 14, Stevensons Cash Store will give a small sack of high grade marbles with
each one pound can of Blue Ribbon Coffee, running until marbles are gone.
John Mallory boarded forty-four Monday afternoon enroute to St. Louis, soon after his 3100 muskrat
furs were loaded on the same train. There were also some coyote and skunk hides.
Brownlee News – Chas. Speese has sold his ranch near Brownlee and Doc James moved the Speese
family to South Dakota Wednesday.

Jimtown News – The Jimtown Club met at Mrs. Arnold Anspach’s and gave a shower for LaVon Gier
Purdum.
The 1950 Censes will begin April 1when enumerators begin house-to-house calls. Nebraska reached its
peak of population in 1930.
Elsmere News – This area was treated to a real blizzard March 7 and to more snow March 10. There
was no mail from Halsey to Purdum for several days. Arnold Fink brought the March 11 mail by plane
and delivered it to families north.

Thomas County Attorney Van G. Clark and Debbie J. Davis were married on Friday, February 28 at the
Thomas County Courthouse. A reception was held at the courthouse hosted by the courthouse
personnel.
Thedford’s basketball Trojans missed a trip to the state tournament when they were beaten by
Litchfield 68 to 58 last Wednesday.

Christa Hamilton is featured in the Senior Spotlight this week. She has been active in volleyball,
basketball, track, music and several clubs. Christa plans to attend Hastings College and major in Business
Administration and Marketing.
Arlene Ewoldt passed from this life on March 5, 2000 at Pioneer Memorial Nursing home in Mullen.
Survivors are her mother, Thelma Pearman of Mullen and sons Mark and Mick Ewoldt and their families.
Memorial services were March 8 at the Assembly of God Church in Mullen and interment was in
Cedarview Cemetery at Mullen.

The Sandhills-Thedford Lady Knights brought home a Fourth Place Trophy at the recent State Girls
Basketball Championships. They won their first game 48-34 over Giltner. In the second round they lost
to Wynot 32-42. In the consolation game the Knights lost to Stuart while playing short two starters with
injuries.
Sandhills Junior and Senior High School students showed well in the recent MNAC Art Show at North
Platte. Logan Hernandez was awarded “Reserve Best of show” for a hand built sculpture in the Junior
High Division. Anthony Hernandez won the High School “Best of Show” with a pencil drawing. Isaac
Ganoung won all-around “Best of Show” for a pencil self-portrait. Other ribbon winners were Tyler
Guggenmos, Alan Rooney, Dylan Lister-McIntyre, Dixie Kennedy, Keesha Albrecht, Andrew McLean,
Carlie Collier and Heidi Saner.
