Friends of the E.D. White Historic Site is excited to share that we received a 2025 Emergency Readiness Grant from the State of Louisiana and the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities to support important improvements to the Visitor Center and storage facility!

With this funding, storm shutters were installed at the Visitor Center, and repairs and upgrades were made to our storage building. This helps protect historic materials, equipment, and visitor spaces from severe Louisiana weather.

“This grant is an important investment in the future of the E.D. White Historic Site,” said Pamela T. Folse, President of the Friends of the E.D. White Historic Site. “We are grateful to the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities for helping ensure this historic place remains protected and accessible for generations to come.”

Check out the before, during, and after photos made possible by all involved, from the funding to the physical repairs of our site. Thank you for helping us preserve Louisiana history!

Our Story

Exploring this National Historic Landmark will offer both a tour through a historical structure and the culture that surrounded the home throughout history. Situated on the banks of Bayou Lafourche, this was the residence of two of Louisiana’s prominent political figures: Governor Edward Douglas White and his son, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Edward Douglass White. The exhibition in this historic house tells the story of the Bayou Lafourche area, tracing the history of the indigenous Chitimacha, Acadian settlers, slavery, sugar cane plantations and the White family.

Built with hand-hewn cypress around 1825, the E.D. White house was originally an example of Creole plantation architecture. White, a Tennessee native of Irish Catholic ancestry, purchased the property in 1829. Upon White’s retirement from politics in 1844 he moved with his wife, Catherine Sidney Lee Ringgold, to the E.D. White Plantation. The house’s transformation began shortly after this time, as the Whites remodeled from the Creole-style raised cottage to the prevalent Greek Revival style, completely changing the appearance of the structure.

Guided tours of the house and property are available. Free admission!
