Crescent Gallery

Crescent Gallery A Community Art Center located in the original Thomaston Fire Department’s Crescent Hose Co. Followed by the Hook and Ladder No.1 on December 19, 1881.

History Behind the Crescent name

The Crescent Hose Company No.2 was organized on April 22, 1881. It was the custom to organize separate fire companies for the different pieces of equipment. Thomaston's two pieces of equipment, the hook and ladder and the hose truck, called for two companies. As they were separate companies, separate facilities had to be provide, even though the companies responde

d to fire alarms together. Each company guarded its independence with due sense of rivalry toward the other company. Accordingly, the building was designed with two front doors, two stairways, and two social rooms. The identifying number of each company was chiseled in granite over its equipment door. The Crescent Gallery is proud to be located on the side once occupied by the Crescent Hose Company No.2 next to the Venetian tower and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
