The Three Lakes Historical Society Museum consists of five refurbished historic buildings from Three Lakes and the surrounding area and two exhibit halls. A research and reference area with computer workstation and wireless internet access is available.

Another quick nature note!
Are you finding “nip twigs” scattered on the ground underneath your oak trees?
Closing up the museum buildings yesterday afternoon, this was the scene beneath the oak near the school house. Having never seen this before, worry set in that this tree was possibly failing. A quick search found though that this was typical squirrel activity meant to bring down all of those big acorns on the ends of branches that wouldn’t support their weight.
Looking up, there were three, maybe more squirrels, dropping leave bundles as I walked by!
This activity is said to happen every year, but this fall it seems to have the squirrels here in a frenzy. Maybe an indicator of the winter to come?

Stop by the museum in the next few days and you might still see the northwoods Monarch butterflies passing through on their migration south. They began moving in northern Wisconsin in late August, headed to the mass migration path that follows close to Interstate 35 in Minnesota on their way to overwintering grounds in the oyamel fir forests of central Mexico.

Adult monarchs need high-energy fuel during their long flight so planting late-blooming native wildflowers like goldenrod and asters provides essential sustenance. Here at the Museum’s pollinator gardens the Monarchs are attracted today to the Cup plant.
This is a tall flower, 4 to 10 feet,
with bright yellow, daisy-like flower heads from mid-summer through fall. The “cup” is at the base of the opposite leaves fused around the four-sided square stem, creating a small basin that catches and holds rainwater.

The water-filled leaf cups serve as drinking stations for bees, butterflies, and birds. Goldfinches eagerly eat the seeds in autumn, and native bees use the stalks for nesting. Today the Cup flowers are serving up nectar for the Monarchs!
Photographing one butterfly can be done. Getting two together is difficult. A dozen is impossible. Stop by for a chance to try yourself!

Farm Stand Friday at the Three Lakes Historical Museum. Corn, melons, & tomatoes. 9:30 until we sell out. Leave a comment here if you plan on stopping for corn. Join us this Thursday August 6 for our last Immersion Excursion of
2026, our series of “out of museum experiences”, where we will be headed to Wolf Lake in the Kimball Creek Unit of the Nicolet - Chequamegon National Forest, 16 miles east of Three Lakes. We will talk about the history of the area which will include Military Road. Joining us will be Chad Kirschbaum of the US Forest Service!
Meet us at 10 at the Demmer Library to caravan, or head there yourself - Highway 32 east to Military Road to Sheltered Valley Road, then about 2.5 miles to Wolf Lake where you will see the orange cones! We will be meeting in the Day Use area there.

Bret & Frisk tonight at 6:30! The weather will clear and it will be a great night for a concert in the park! Sloppy D’s food truck starting after 4 serving her famous smash burgers (cash & Venmo) Hollow Tree will be firing up their outdoor BBQ. AND we are celebrating Adam’s Cabins! 100 years on Spirit Lakes!

What a great night in Three Lakes! Come and enjoy.
