The Region of Three Oaks Museum

The Region of Three Oaks Museum The Region of Three Oaks Museum is open 12-5 PM, Friday-Sunday, from May through October. K. O.

The Region of Three Oaks Museum collects and displays historical artifacts, papers and records that tell the story of New Buffalo, Chikaming, Weesaw, and Three Oaks Townships. An earlier museum, the Chamberlain Memorial Museum, was founded in 1916 by the E. Warren Foundation (the first foundation chartered in the state of Michigan). The museum contained some 80,000 artifacts, but was dissolved in

the 1950's, its collections transferred to Michigan State University. In 2008, a group of local citizens set about creating a new Region of Three Oaks Museum, mounting a capital campaign and building a new building on Featherbone Avenue in Three Oaks. The museum is just to the west of Elm Street-- adjacent to the Acorn Theater, one block from Vickers Theater and two blocks from Dewey Cannon Park. Our exhibits, focusing on area history, change frequently, and we offer programs on historical topics of local interest throughout the year,

A Warren Featherbone package from the 1950s. How do we know its age? Because it says it was produced in Gainesville GA, where Warren’s moved in the 50s, shutting down all Three Oaks operations.

Memorial Day-- originally called Decoration Day-- was created in 1868 by the head of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union Army veterans. The GAR called for prayers for peace. There was a strong GAR presence in this area. Three Oaks hosted a reunion "encampment" in 1907. The museum is open 12-5 throughout this Memorial Day weekend, including Monday. Come pay a visit!

From the museum collection-- a wonderful diary/sketchbook compiled by Velma Gridley (1896-1985) as a 17 year old in Three Oaks. Young Velma made sketches that included biographical notes about famous authors of the day and their literary works. She had artistic talent and was well read, too-- check out her drawings!

Susan Wagner Churchill was a photographer in Three Oaks in the 1870s and 1880s-- the only woman in the 1873 roster of merchants published in the newspaper. Her descendants believe she was the first woman in the Midwest to take tintype photos.
An amazing box camera passed down through her family is on display at the museum, along with the "posing chair" she may have used.
Come check it out-- we're open 12-5, through Sunday.

Seven steadfast TROTOM volunteers spent a dusty morning taking up the worn out carpeting at the EK Warren & Son building at 7 S Elm, and scraping up the old foam backing stuck to the floor. We'll have that wood floor buffed and polished by the time that building re-opens, housing museum exhibits. The transformation is underway!
