Thurmont Historical Society

Thurmont Historical Society Dedicated to preserving and showcasing Thurmont's history The original house was built and lived in by Daniel Rouzer, grandfather of Col. John R. Col. Winpigler

The History of the Creeger House is older than you would guess, as the Victorian style brick house was actually built in 1876 built around a smaller log house that dates back to the 1820s. Rouzer who later bought the house after returning to Thurmont as a hero from the Civil War. Rouzer was very active in the Thurmont Community, serving for 45 years as the Trustee of the Thurmont Schools, 6 years

as Resister of Wills for Frederick County, and serving as Director of the local Bank, Water company, and other civic enterprises. Following his death, the house passed into a nine year residency by retired farmer, Walter Dorsey and his family. In 1926, the house was sold to Edwin Creeger, who was the local Chevrolet dealer at the time. Edwin Creeger Jr., the only son of the Creeger family, lost his life during World War II and was the first casualty from Thurmont. After the death of Edwin Creeger Sr. in 1971, Ethel Creeger never returned to the house, and donated it to the Thurmont Historical Society in 1990. The Thurmont Historical Society maintains the house to this day, using it as a living museum to house the artifacts and stories of Thurmont. Our Board of Directors & Volunteers

Thank you to everyone who joined us last evening for a presentation about the history of the flag that inspired the Star-Spangled Banner! Mary Pickersgill, and a few other women, sewed the massive flags that flew over Fort McHenry during the battle with the British in September 1814.

This flag can now be seen in the Smithsonian and you can visit the house where Mary Pickersgill made this flag. (See the third to last photo in this post for a scale of the flag compared to her house! They eventually had to move the project across the street when the flag no longer fit inside her residence.)

Thank you to Chris Sniezek, Executive Director of The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House, delivering a phenomenal presentation!

Special thank you to the Friends of Thurmont Regional Library for hosting this presentation and partnering with us. We are looking forward to this being the first of many.

More about the presentation: πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
"Mary Pickers-who?: Baltimore's Flag Maker and Early American Women's Labor" will be led by Chris Sniezek, Executive Director of the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House & Museum. He will present on the life and legacy of Mary Young Pickersgill, seamstress who created the flag which inspired Francis Scott Key to write our national anthem. The world knows of Bettsy Ross, but Mary's work both as a seamstress and social philanthropist in Baltimore has a longstanding, under-known legacy on our national story. A young widow in the city, Mary bucked the traditions of her times and foraged her own path creating a better life not only for herself, but for those in her care. Now is your chance to discover how the Flag House evolved from a private residence and business under the Pickersgill care to an accredited public museum dedicated to promoting Baltimore's national story to visitors of all ages."
