This week in our “Where are they now? series, we are featuring one of our more recent graduates.

Devan Godbee is originally from Millen, GA and began her role as Ben Hill County 4-H Extension Agent in February of this year.

Her time at Destination Ag helped her with classroom management skills, professional flexibility, and time management. She also gained experience interacting with teachers and schools and working in collaboration with others. She is implementing all of these things daily as a youth development professional.

Devan emphasized the impact of the Destination Ag program for both visiting students and ABAC students alike.

In her words, “Destination Ag provides students the opportunity to learn about agriculture and get an understanding of where their food comes from. But also why the industry is important and how it impacts them more than just at meal time. As ABAC students it gives us a chance to explore our passions and work hands on with kids. Not many students can say that they have made curriculum that has been implemented and taught to hundreds of kids before ever entering their own classroom. It also allows ABAC students to explore areas of agriculture that they may not be learning about in class.”

Since she received a shoutout in one in our last “Where are they now?” Post we thought it was fitting to turn the spotlight on Ashleigh Hurst.

Originally from Cairo, Georgia Ashleigh is currently an agriculture teacher at Pelham City Middle. She is also excited to finish her Specialist Degree in Education from Murray State University this spring.

Before teaching middle school she taught agriculture at the elementary level in Brooks County for two years. She was able to directly transfer her experience with that age group from DA to the classroom; she even used some of the lesson plans she helped develop during her time at Destination Ag.

She’s thankful for the experience she gained teaching at Destination Ag and the friendships she made along the way. She encourages ABAC students to take advantage of the opportunity to work at Destination Ag. Ashleigh says that the experience is rewarding and will make you a better teacher.

Next in our “Where are they now?” Series is Kalei Hogan. She is a 4th year agriculture teacher and FFA Advisor at her alma mater Clewiston Christian School. She shared that her FFA Chapter is also celebrating its 10th year!

Kalei credits Destination Ag with cultivating her passion for teaching agriculture and making her the teacher she is today. Along with her professional growth, she says that the friendships she built with her coworkers were just as impactful. She shared one of the fondest memories of her time at ABAC was when her Destination Ag peers hosted a bridal shower for her.

A message from Kalei : “To any ABAC students questioning whether or not to apply to Destination Ag - I say whole heartedly, do it! I met my bestie (shoutout Ashleigh) there, found my passion for teaching, and made memories that will last a lifetime. There are no words to truly describe the many ways that it benefited me. The time I worked there was the best part of my time at ABAC! “

First in our “where are they now?” series, we have Sadie Branch, formerly Sadie Hobbs who taught at Destination Ag from 2017-2018.

Sadie transferred to the University of Georgia to finish her bachelor’s degree. She then received a law degree from Mercer University and now practices Insurance Defense for the law firm of Levy, Sibley, Foreman & Speir in Columbus, Georgia.

She married Joseph Branch, and together they live and work as the 6th on Joseph’s family farm, growing and selling bermuda hay. They will also be welcoming their first daughter in December of this year!

Sadie shares many great memories from her time at Destination Ag from working with different animals, teaching the kids, watching the program space grow in the early days, to even sparking her interest in a career in law.

She encourages ABAC students to take the opportunity to teach at Destination Ag that even if you aren’t planning on becoming a teacher it helps with public speaking and so much more!
