Navy began construction of 17 wooden hangars to house the K-class blimps being used for anti-submarine coast patrol and convoy es**rt. Two of these hangars were built at the Naval Air Station Tilllamook, commissioned in December 1942 to serve the Oregon-Washington coastal area. Construction of the two hangars was rushed to completion. Hangar "B" was the first one built and was completed in August

of 1943. Hangar "A" which was destroyed in a 1992 fire, was completed in only 27 days. Amazingly, there were no serious injuries or deaths on the whole project. Stationed at NAS Tillamook was Squadron ZP-33 with a complement of eight K-ships. The K-ships were 252 feet long and filled with 425,000 cu. With a range of 2,000 miles and an ability to stay aloft for three days, they were well suited for coast patrol and convoy es**rt. Naval Air Station Tillamook was decommissioned in 1948.

Several important updates regarding the Tillamook Air Museum's damaged historic Hangar B were shared during yesterday's Port of Tillamook Bay Board meeting.

Port Board President Jack Mulder emphasized that the Port has NOT walked away from Hangar B or its future. While the Board previously voted not to commit additional Port funds toward the Hangar B repair project, discussions with potential partners continues actively behind the scenes. Mulder noted that the Port remains supportive of efforts to preserve Hangar B and is exploring partnerships that could help address both the local match requirements associated with potential FEMA funding and the long-term preservation of the hangar.

Friends of the Tillamook Air Museum President Dallas Adams also addressed the Board and emphasized that preserving Hangar B will require greater awareness, support, and involvement. He encouraged continued collaboration between community members, preservation organizations, public agencies, and potential partners, noting that as long as Hangar B remains standing, there is still time and opportunity to find solutions.

The Port has received grant documents from the Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM) and continues to work with OEM and FEMA on projects associated with the December storm damage to Hangar B. Those projects include repairs related to the hole in the hangar, emergency safety repairs, and the large flap of roofing that was peeled back during the storm and continues to pose a safety concern.

TILLAMOOK, Ore. โ€” With a heavy heart, the Port of Tillamook Bay board, following extensive discussion, financial analysis, and consultation with industry experts since December, the Port Board voted 4-1 to not proceed with repairs to the storm-damaged roof section of Hangar B following the December storm event.
The decision came after months of evaluation regarding the long-term financial sustainability of the historic structure and the significant local financial obligations tied to any potential repair effort. While FEMA assistance may become available, the Port would still be responsible for a required 25% local match โ€” estimated to be $1.3 million โ€” which would require the Port to secure additional financing through a loan for this portion of the roof repair only and does not include the whole building.
Board members also discussed the ongoing risks associated with the facility, including concerns about future storm damage and the uncertainty surrounding long-term maintenance obligations for the aging structure. For now, and into the immediate future, the Tillamook Air Museum will remain closed. Any significant repairs (more than just the current safety issue) would take months or years to complete throughout the building.
The Port board emphasized that immediate safety concerns are being addressed. The hanging portion of the damaged roof structure, identified as the primary public safety issue, will be removed in the near future. In addition, the Port will continue pursuing opportunities and partnerships related to asbestos abatement assistance and future site stabilization efforts.
Throughout the evaluation process, the Board collaborated closely with consultants experienced in similar historic military hangar facilities, including recent work involving Navy hangars in California. The Port expressed appreciation to Turner & Townsend, as well as others, for assisting with cost analysis, condition assessments, and financial projections.
Commissioners acknowledged that the decision was extremely difficult given the communityโ€™s deep connection to the iconic World War II-era structure. However, financial realities ultimately guided the Boardโ€™s action. Commissioner Baertlein stated that the decision couldnโ€™t be made with their hearts, but had to be financial. Repair of the full structure is not sustainable in the future. The boardโ€™s role is to oversee financial decisions for the port, and the board wasnโ€™t willing to put the rest of the port in financial distress with debt.
โ€œEveryone loves Hangar B and recognizes its historical significance,โ€ Commissioner Bill Baertlein stated. โ€œBut even if the building were rebuilt, the long-term financial outlook remains unsustainable. Estimated annual maintenance costs alone are three times greater than the revenue the building had been generating.โ€
The Port also extended sincere appreciation to the Friends of Tillamook Air Museum for their persistence, advocacy, and assistance in gathering information and data throughout the process.
โ€œThis was not an easy decision for anyone involved,โ€ commissioners noted. โ€œWe are grateful to the many community members, partners, and supporters who care deeply about Hangar B and its future.โ€

After 8 years at the helm of the Tillamook Air Museum, Museum Director Rita Welch is moving on. During her tenure, Rita was instrumental in helping to guide the Museum through a period of tremendous positive change. Because of her strong leadership, the Museum saw increased visitation, new exhibits and expanded programs, and renewed enthusiasm from our community. Rita also played a crucial role in increasing community outreach, working closely with nearby school districts to bring the museumโ€™s extensive history to life for the next generation.

For those of us who worked closely with Rita, today is a bittersweet day. We are sad that such an incredible leader and friend is leaving, but we also know she will find continued success wherever she goes!

Please join us in thanking Rita for her years of dedication to the Tillamook Air Museum and wishing her continued success and happiness in the future!

Portland's KGW recently aired a story about the ongoing situation surrounding Hangar B and the Tillamook Air Museum.

In the interview, Port of Tillamook Bay Manager Michele Bradley discusses the December storm damage to Hangar B, the possibility of FEMA funding helping repair the damage, and the 25% local match that would be required.

People often ask how they can help support the Museum and Hangar B. Here are a few ways to do that:

Support the museum through our online store:

Make a donation to support operations and recovery:

Donate through Friends of Tillamook Air Museum, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving Hangar B:

Thank you to everyone who has continued supporting the Museum, sharing our story, and helping preserve an important piece of both American history and Tillamook County history for future generations!

The hangar is one of the only surviving Word War II-era hangars built to house blimps; a December storm damaged a large section of the roof.
