Navy began construction of 17 wooden hangars to house the K-class blimps being used for anti-submarine coast patrol and convoy es**rt. Two of these hangars were built at the Naval Air Station Tilllamook, commissioned in December 1942 to serve the Oregon-Washington coastal area. Construction of the two hangars was rushed to completion. Hangar "B" was the first one built and was completed in August of 1943. Hangar "A" which was destroyed in a 1992 fire, was completed in only 27 days. Amazingly, there were no serious injuries or deaths on the whole project. Stationed at NAS Tillamook was Squadron ZP-33 with a complement of eight K-ships. The K-ships were 252 feet long and filled with 425,000 cu. With a range of 2,000 miles and an ability to stay aloft for three days, they were well suited for coast patrol and convoy es**rt. Naval Air Station Tillamook was decommissioned in 1948.

What an incredible evening!

Nearly 80 volunteers took time out of their evening this past Friday night to join us at the Tillamook Air Museum, and we couldn’t be more grateful!

Thanks to all of you, we accomplished an amazing amount of work! We moved airplanes, cleaned exhibits, helped get our gift shop ready, and tackled countless other projects as we prepare to reopen our doors.

Friday night was a wonderful reminder of just how special our community truly is. Seeing so many people come together, roll up their sleeves, and give their time to help the museum was both humbling and inspiring.

We also want to extend a HUGE thank you to some wonderful organizations and businesses who helped make the evening possible!

𝐖𝐄’𝐑𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆!

After ten long months, we are thrilled to announce that the Tillamook Air Museum will reopen to the public on Thursday, October 29!

Since December’s storm, an incredible amount of work has taken place behind the scenes, and we are moving quickly to get the Museum ready to once again welcome visitors through the doors of Hangar B.

With historic Hangar B & the Tillamook Air Museum now under the ownership of the nonprofit Vintage Aviation Museum, a new chapter is beginning for the Tillamook Air Museum. Our first priority has been to restore the museum experience our visitors knew before the storm, returning aircraft, exhibits and collections to the museum and preparing Hangar B for reopening. At the same time, we are already looking ahead, with plans to continue improving exhibits, adding more to see and building on what makes the Tillamook Air Museum such a special place.

Work on Hangar B is moving forward as well. We are actively working through the details needed to patch the section of roof damaged in last December’s storm, while continuing to plan for the long-term care of this remarkable historic building.
Reopening is a major milestone, and it is only the beginning. There is still plenty ahead of us, but things are moving quickly, and we are excited about what comes next.

We also want to thank everyone who has supported the museum, volunteered their time and encouraged us along the way. Getting to this point would not have been possible without that support.

Join us at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, as we officially reopen the Tillamook Air Museum. To celebrate our return, the Museum will remain open until 7:00 p.m. that day.

With historic Hangar B now transitioning to the nonprofit Vintage Aviation Museum, a new chapter is beginning for the Tillamook Air Museum, and we could use a little help from our community as we get ready to open the doors again.

𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟗, 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟓:𝟎𝟎–𝟖:𝟎𝟎 𝐩.𝐦.

We’ll be cleaning aircraft, exhibit boards and glass doors, folding and putting away the tarps that protected our aircraft during the closure, moving some of our smaller aircraft back into position, and counting Gift Shop merchandise as we complete our inventory.

All supplies and materials will be provided, and food and refreshments will be served.

We know many of you have been following the storm damage to the hangar. Work is continuing to remove damaged material and prepare that portion of the roof for repair. The damaged area is at the far end of the hangar, well away from where our volunteer activities will take place.

Getting the museum ready to reopen is a heavy lift, but with community support, it’s absolutely doable. If you’ve been wanting to help get the Tillamook Air Museum back up and running, this is your chance to roll up your sleeves and be part of it!

We’re getting ready to repair the storm-damaged roof of historic Hangar B at the Tillamook Air Museum!

The contractor has been lined up and is ready to begin the roof repairs as soon as the roof-flap removal work is completed.

We’ve made significant progress getting to this point, but now we need to raise additional funds to help complete the roof repairs and get the Museum back up and running!

AND...we have an incredible opportunity to make every donation go twice as far.

The Friends of the Tillamook Air Museum (FOTAM) has stepped forward with a $50,000 MATCHING CHALLENGE!

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐁!

Both cranes are now in position, and crews are beginning the careful process of removing the large sections of damaged roofing that have been hanging from Hangar B since the December storm.

Removing this damaged section is an important step forward. After months of waiting, it is encouraging to see the cranes in place and crews beginning this important work on the historic hangar.

We’ll continue to keep everyone updated and share more as the work progresses.

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐁!

The first of two cranes has arrived at the Tillamook Air Museum, marking an important first step in addressing the damage to our historic hangar.

The first order of business will be the removal of the large section of roofing that has remained hanging from the damaged area since the December storm. The cranes will soon be positioned to do this important work.

While phase one is not yet the repair of the damaged roof itself, it is a necessary first step as work moves forward at Hangar B.

We know many of you have been following the museum closely and asking about the hangar, so we wanted to share this progress with you. We’ll continue to keep everyone updated as work moves ahead.

𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐎 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊!

Sometimes a photograph really does capture a moment you would have had to see to believe.

This rare color photograph captures legendary Oregon aviator Norman “Swede” Ralston flying his T-6 Texan through Hangar B during a fly-in at the former Naval Air Station Tillamook in 1950.

And yes, he really did fly through the hangar.

Ralston was already well known throughout the Pacific Northwest as an accomplished aerobatic pilot. He later recalled that when the promoters suggested flying his T-6 through Tillamook’s enormous wooden blimp hangar, he thought they were joking. When he agreed to do it, they apparently thought he was joking, too.

He wasn’t.

The photograph gives some sense of just how low Ralston was flying. Although Hangar B rises 192 feet at its highest point, the top of its enormous door opening is only about 120 feet above the ground. Here, Ralston’s T-6 is already inside the doorway, with the people and vehicles below providing an extraordinary sense of scale.

Look closely behind the aircraft and Ralston appears to be just beginning to put on the smoke as he enters the hangar.

More than 75 years later, photographs of Swede Ralston flying through Hangar B remain among the most remarkable images in the history of this extraordinary building!

𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟏𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 • 𝟐𝟓 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫

Today, 25 years later, we remember.

We remember the 2,977 innocent lives lost on September 11th, 2001. We honor the fallen. We honor the survivors. And we remember all those whose lives were forever changed by what happened that morning.

For those of us who lived through September 11th, today is a day to reflect.

Twenty-five years have passed, yet the memories of that morning remain extraordinarily vivid. Where we were. What we were doing. The confusion and disbelief. The horror of watching one terrible moment follow another. And the realization that we were witnessing something that would remain with us for the rest of our lives.

Today, where the Twin Towers once stood, the National September 11 Memorial offers a place for remembrance and reflection. Water falls into the footprints of the two towers, surrounded by the names of those who were taken that day.

There is something profoundly moving about standing there. Amid the sound of the falling water and the names stretching around the memorial, the enormity of what was lost is impossible to escape.

Each of those names represents a life that should have continued. And together, they remind us that the loss of September 11th did not end when that terrible day was over. For those who lost loved ones, the grief and loss of that day have remained a part of their lives for 25 years.

Twenty-five years later, time has moved forward. But remembrance asks us, for a moment, to stop.

To remember those who were taken from us.

To honor those who remain.

And to ensure that, no matter how many years pass, they are never, EVER, forgotten!

𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟏𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟎

For the past ten days, we have shared photographs that tell pieces of the story of September 11th, 2001. We end today with a photograph of the South Tower of the World Trade Center beginning to collapse, one of the many truly horrifying moments of that morning. As people watched from the streets below and on television around the world, they witnessed a scene that would become forever etched into our collective memory.

Twenty-five years later, these images are still difficult to look at. For those who lived through that morning, they can bring back memories with an immediacy that makes the passage of a quarter century seem almost impossible. An entire generation has now grown up with no memory of that day. They may not remember the world before September 11th, but they live in the world it created. For them, these photographs are a window into a day they did not experience, but one whose consequences have shaped their lives. That is one of the reasons remembering, documenting, and telling these stories remains so important.

Photographer Gulnara Samoilova, who snapped this photo, was just blocks from the World Trade Center that morning. As she documented the devastation unfolding around her, a police officer asked how she could continue taking photographs. Her answer was simple: “I have to document this. It’s history.”

Within minutes, the familiar New York skyline was disappearing. But September 11th changed far more than a skyline. It shattered a sense of security many Americans had taken for granted and changed how we understood our vulnerability, our country, and the world around us. Its consequences would reach far beyond that terrible morning, shaping our nation and the lives of millions of people in ways that continue to this day.

Tomorrow marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

For those of us who experienced that day, September 11th is one of those rare moments in history when we remember exactly where we were when we heard the news. We remember what we were doing. We remember who we were with. We remember watching the world as we knew it change before our eyes.

A quarter century has passed, but for those of us who experienced it, in so many ways it can still feel like yesterday.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟏𝐭𝐡, 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟏? 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫? 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲.

Tomorrow, we remember the nearly 3,000 people who were lost, those who responded, those who survived, and all those whose lives were forever changed. We will never, EVER, forget!
