Drake Well Museum and Park

Drake Well Museum and Park An interactive historic site chronicling the birth and development of the modern petroleum industry.
(426)

The museum's 240-acre site features a board-for-board replica of Edwin L. Drake’s engine house built around the National Historic Landmark well, operating oil field machinery, 12,000 square feet of interior exhibits and the largest artifact and archival collection focused on the birth of the modern petroleum industry. Drake Well Museum and Park also boasts two satellite heritage sites, Historic Pi

thole City (Pennsylvania's legendary oil boomtown) and McClintock Well #1. In addition to engaging and experiential indoor/outdoor learning environments, our three historic sites offer an abundance of year-round recreational opportunities. Come enjoy paved bike trails, delayed harvest fly fishing in Oil Creek, modern picnic facilities, hiking trails, a neighboring 9,000-acre state park and more.

We have been enjoying a wonderful school tour "season" here at Drake Well! Here is a photo of a recent visit from 4th graders in Titusville Area School District!!

On Thursday, May 21st, 2026, the 4th grade students from Hydetown Elementary, Main Street Elementary and Pleasantville Elementary Schools got to tour the grounds of Drake Well and see the steam powered drill in action, as well as try out percussion drilling. The students learned about the larger version of the steam powered drill, the Indian pits, and Oil Creek. They also got to explore the Drake Well museum and interact with all of the exhibits, as well as watch the movie explaining the history of Drake Well. Generous grants provided the funding for the students' admission and transportation. Thank you to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission/Drake Well Museum and Park and the Friends of Drake Well!

We are honored to be recognized for our preservation and restoration efforts on our Northern Ordnance Yo-Yo Rig! Thank you to the Oil Region Alliance and to all staff and volunteers for their hard work!

This week we're celebrating the winners of the Oil Region Historic Preservation Awards.

Today's featured winner is the Northern Ordnance Yo Yo Drilling Rig at Drake Well.

Drake Well Museum & Park and Friends of Drake Well, Inc. were nominated by Drake Well Museum & Park under the Historic Appreciation category for their
restoration of the Northern Ordnance “Yo-Yo” Drilling Rig.

The “Yo-Yo” Drilling Rig was built in 1949 by John B. Hawley Jr. and Albert ‘Slick’ Spence. This drilling rig was used on a wide variety of sites in Venango County until the 1980s and was acquired by Drake Well Museum & Park in 1992. The drilling rig was inactive for thirty years before being restored to working order.

Join us Thursday, May 14 from 6-8 p.m. at the Rhoades Center on the Oil Region Venango Campus to celebrate this and all of the winners of the Historic Preservation Awards!
