Remembering D-Day – June 6, 1944

Eighty-two years ago, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy and parachuted into occupied France in one of the most important military operations in history. Their courage and sacrifice helped secure the freedom we enjoy today.

At the Currahee Military Museum, we are proud to offer books that help preserve the stories of D-Day and the men who fought there.

📚 D-Day: The Campaign Across France by Jay Wertz provides an illustrated look at the invasion and the campaign that followed.

📚 D-Day with the Screaming Eagles by George Koskimaki tells the story of the 101st Airborne Division soldiers who parachuted into Normandy during the early hours of June 6, 1944. Many of these men began their journey at Camp Toccoa as Currahees.

Whether you are a lifelong student of military history or just beginning to learn about the Greatest Generation, these books offer a deeper understanding of the events and sacrifices of D-Day.

Stop by the museum gift shop to browse these and other military history titles.

We remember the heroes of D-Day and honor their legacy.

It is our great privilege to wish a very happy 102nd birthday to WWII veteran and our amazing friend, Sgt. Andy Negra! We had the immense honor of hosting Andy for his 100th birthday and as a speaker and attendee at our monthly Veterans’ Coffee meetings.

Andy served in the Army’s 128th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 6th Armored Division. On July 18, 1944, Andy landed on Utah Beach in Normandy. His unit went on to the battle of Brest, the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle for Bastogne, and the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp. We will never be able to properly thank Andy for his incredible legacy, service, and sacrifices, but we celebrate and honor him today.

It’s that time of year again where I ask you to absolutely celebrate the greatest country on earth… but also ask that you remember those families for whom this weekend is somber. Please remember all those for whom this weekend will be rough. The mothers and fathers, the spouses and children of our fallen. The commanders and brothers and sisters. Have a good time, but take a moment of silence to remember those who paid for it.
