Tonganoxie Community Historical Society A non-profit, since 1981, whose mission is to collect, identify, record, preserve, and display mater We can host up to 150 people.

If you are looking for the perfect place for a wedding, graduation, anniversary, birthday, family reunion, or any business/personal meeting or event. Please consider one of the buildings at the Tonganoxie Community Historical Society site. Photographers find the museum site a picturesque setting for portraits of families and individuals. Photographers are welcome to use the premises during our normal hours.

Everyone is invited to our free Tonganoxie Community Historical Society 4th Tuesday Program on May 26, at the historical site at 7 pm.

The TCHS welcomes Lem Sheppard an internationally known Blues guitarist, vocalist, and historian based in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Lem’s program will explore African-American Musicians in Kansas 1860-1920. During this time many African-American musicians performed in mandolin quartets, cornet bands, orchestras, and string bands at civic events, weddings, fairs, barn dances, and in private homes.

Lem was playing guitar by the age of nine with sons of some of the Kansas City Blues veterans. He was nominated in 1999 by a congressional committee to represent Kansas in a solo performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He composed and performed the soundtrack to the PBS documentary Black, White, and Brown. He has been honored by the Kansas Folklore Society and the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame. Lem will include some musical samples in his presentation.

This event is made possible by the Federation of State Humanities Councils in partnership with the Smithsonian Folklife Foundation.

The meeting begins at 7 with a brief business meeting followed by the historical program.

Refreshments will be served after the program.

Come prepared to run, jump, use your imagination and make new friends.

When: Mon-Fri, June 1-5, 2026

Time: 9am-noon

Where: Tonganoxie Historical Site & Museum, 201 W. Washington, Tonganoxie

Ages: entering grades 4-6 in the fall

Fee: $50. Registration opens on Monday, May 11, 2026. Registration will be limited to twenty (20) youth. There are scholarships available.
