Alice C Sabatini Art Gallery Your connection to the Arts: inspiring curiosity, developing visual literacy, and building our commu We help people get art! The Alice C.

Sabatini Art Gallery promotes the understanding and enjoyment of art through diverse collections, exhibitions, and educational experiences. We are committed to providing access to art, inspiring curiosity, making connections, and building community. Topeka's oldest public art collection began here in the late 19th century. In our main gallery, we host six annual exhibits including two national com

petitions, a show for young people, and exhibits featuring local, national and international artists. As of 2012, we have committed the entry space (aka the Dr. Cotter and Jeanne Hirschberg Gallery) to being a full-time permanent collection exhibition space. It will also be full-service, meaning it will never close, reflecting the same hours of operation and service as the Library. Curated exhibits with selections from our 130(+)-year-old public art collection will rotate four times a year.

At Runway Remix, we're looking at the creative process through the lens of wearable art. Local artists chose items from the library's permanent collection as inspiration for their original pieces. Fiber artist June Sun explains how her experiences at the Chihuly Garden and Glass museum, and the library's collection of Dale Chihuly glass, shaped her ideas for Crimson Nocturne, her dress in this exhibit. She walks us through the process for planning the dress and building each part of it through the careful work of dyeing and wet felting. Come see it in the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery by May 17.

Runway Remix is all about self-expression through wearable art, but some pieces flip this idea around and put art back on the canvas. Champions by Michael Ott shows how personal fashion can recognize a moment in time. This lithograph celebrates the University of Kansas winning the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship in 1988. View it at Runway Remix in our Alice C. Sabatini Gallery through May 17.

At Runway Remix we are examining the artistic process through the lens of clothing and fashion. Seven artists developed original pieces of wearable fiber art inspired by pieces from the library’s permanent art collection. You, too, can be inspired by the unique creations on display. Brittany tells us about Wrap-Around Time by Marjorie Schick of Pittsburg, Kansas. This timepiece plays with the tension between form and function using tentacle-like structures instead of a traditional watch band. See it at Runway Remix in the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery now through May 17.

Have you ever wondered how artists take their ideas from inspiration to creation? Our current exhibit, Runway Remix: Fashion in Focus, examines the artistic process through the lens of clothing and fashion. Natalie, an area teenager, is one of seven artists who developed original pieces of wearable fiber art inspired by pieces from the library’s permanent art collection. She chose the painting Above Santa Fe by Dennis Downey to guide her design.

Everything old is new again in the latest exhibit at the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery. Brittany Keegan, curator of exhibits, gave WIBW Melissa Brunner a sneak peek of our next free exhibit, Runway Remix, ahead of its Feb 27 opening.

The idea started with a concept of creating our own Project Runway-type exhibit. Gallery staff enlisted various artists, students, costume designers, and volunteers to create “wearable art” inspired by pieces from our permanent art collection.

Those creations form the heart of the exhibit. In addition, it features an interactive area to test patterns and designs, and learn about clothing construction.

Runway Remix runs Feb. 27 to May 17.
