This might seem a little snarky, but it's only intended as an observation. Cover charges to be entertained......music, plays, fairs, etc. Most of the time, artists pay to entertain and rarely make the sale to compensate the cost. Galleries come and go unless they have a separate means of recouping overhead or have "Friends of" memberships or collectives. Yet for an artist, that still leaves the issue of getting paid or the elusive sale from all those folks looking to be entertained. And for those artists that cry "it's not about the money", let's be real. That's a poor business model and not sustainable. Until, by some miracle, artists are subsidized, it is about the money, if for anything, to buy more paint, clay, etc. What if galleries had a cover charge to see the art. Museums do it. Clubs do it. Art fairs do it (artists pay to play). It could eliminate hanging fees. Aid with better promotions and pay the light bill. Ah, but this is just a coffee fueled ramble for your Sunday morning pleasure. In the meantime, I have a show going until the end of October at Nexlynx. No cover, no hanging fee, a great business and friend to the arts.😁
